Primary Function

The Principal Systems Engineer is a visionary leader responsible for architecting, implementing, and optimizing cloud infrastructure solutions, primarily focused on Azure but also supporting hybrid and multi-cloud environments (AWS, Azure, VMware). This role is pivotal in driving cloud governance, compliance, cost optimization, and operational efficiency, while mentoring engineering teams and shaping the organization's cloud strategy.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and architecture of complex, scalable, and highly available Azure-based solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into robust cloud architectures.
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform, ARM templates, or Azure Resource Manager for automated provisioning and configuration management.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines for automating infrastructure and application deployments.
  • Automate routine operational tasks using scripting languages (PowerShell, Python, Bash).
  • Enforce security best practices and compliance controls in Azure environments.
  • Design and implement monitoring solutions to proactively address performance and reliability issues.
  • Optimize cloud resources for cost efficiency and performance.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to engineering teams.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in troubleshooting and resolving complex Azure infrastructure issues.
  • Participate in on-call rotations for critical incident response and resolution.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for cloud architectures, configurations, and procedures.
  • Conduct knowledge sharing sessions to enhance team expertise.
  • Stay current with cloud infrastructure trends and best practices; recommend improvements and new technologies.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Proven experience as a Principal Engineer with a focus on Azure cloud solutions.
  • Extensive experience with Azure services (compute, storage, networking, security).
  • Strong proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation tools.
  • In-depth knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
  • Expertise in designing and implementing security controls in Azure environments.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
Preferred Skills
  • Azure certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert).
  • Experience with hybrid cloud and multi-cloud architectures (Azure, AWS, VMware).
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Knowledge of networking concepts and Azure networking services.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps for collaboration and continuous integration.
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance and security frameworks.
  • Experience with monitoring and security tools (Azure Monitor, Sentinel, etc.).
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills for complex infrastructure issues.
  • Project management and time management capability.
  • High learning agility and ability to integrate new technologies.
  • High degree of professional maturity, integrity, and ability to maintain confidential data.
Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge
  • Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, ARM, CloudFormation).
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective professional relationships across the organization.
  • High degree of business acumen and technical aptitude.
  • Self-directed and comfortable working with ambiguity and uncertainty.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
  • Working on-site at assigned office location.
  • Regular and punctual attendance adhering to schedule established by leadership.
  • Flexibility to work occasional adjusted work schedules, overtime, and evening and/or weekend hours to meet deadlines or as business needs demand.
  • Working in a cubicle hub, maintaining focus on phone calls in a noisy environment within earshot of multiple other conversations.
  • Sedentary work in a stationary position at a cubicle for prolonged periods of time.
  • Constant repetitive motions required for operating a computer, such as typing and managing phone calls.
  • Constantly communicating effectively verbally in English, including accurately exchanging information with others following identification of correct procedures.
