POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Orthopedic Technician will perform clinical and administrative tasks under the supervision of the Orthopedic Supervisor. This is an hourly, non-exempt position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Verifies the patient's identity, current medications/prescriptions, documents medical history including orthopedic history and records patient vital signs in electronic health record system.
  • Prepares, administers, and documents medications and therapies according to established policy and procedures.
  • Clarifies reason for patient visit to prepare them for examinations and procedures within the Orthopedic Technician's scope of practice.
  • Assists the Provider in clinic procedures including placing and removing all types of casts and splints and performing wound care.
  • Assists with or performs (under supervision) closed reduction of fractures.
  • Performs various administrative duties, including greeting patients, pulling charts, and updating patient information in the electronic medical records system.
  • Answers incoming calls, documents information pertinent to each call, and returns calls from patients and families.
  • Responds to healthcare communications and requests using different platforms including e-mail, in a timely manner.
  • Checks and maintains inventory of supplies and equipment in exam rooms using department checklist, replenishing items as needed.
  • Participates in maintaining the cleanliness of waiting room and examining rooms following cleaning and disinfecting procedures in conjunction with the Environmental Services department.
  • Prepares patients for x-ray/fluoroscopy imaging.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Active American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong communication and patient service skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary clinical team.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Previous experience as a medical assistant or clinical assistant in an orthopedic or musculoskeletal practice.
  • Familiarity with orthopedic terminology, anatomy, and clinical workflows.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to demonstrate emotional maturity and approach stressful situations and remain calm under emergency situations and when handling multiple tasks.
  • Working knowledge of orthopedic procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients.
  • Ability to document and communicate pertinent information.
  • Knowledge of scope of practice when working with radiographic imaging devices.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Frequently alternates between walking, standing, sitting and reaching throughout the day.
  • Frequently required to travel between the Breakthrough Way and Pecos locations.
  • Occasionally stoops, bends, and crouches while assisting patients
  • Frequently uses fine hand coordination and manual dexterity to perform accurate data entry on the computer.
  • Lifting and pushing/pulling up to 20 lbs. occurs occasionally. May need to assist patients in a wheelchair and safely support the full weight of a patient when necessary.


LANGUAGE SKILLS: Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred, but not required.

Shift Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00AM to 4:30PM.
