The Respiratory Therapist will work autonomously in various acute and critical care settings, collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide appropriate treatment. Candidates should have the ability to care for patients across all age groups, including infants, children, adults, and seniors.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct respiratory therapy procedures independently per physician orders and departmental protocols. - 20%
• Collect blood gases from various sites, analyze, and accurately report results. - 10%
• Initiate, monitor, and manage all types of mechanical ventilation for patients in need. - 20%
• Manage airways and associated equipment effectively. - 10%
• Document and charge for all respiratory care activities accurately, providing patient and family education when necessary. - 10%
• Maintain effective communication with healthcare team members, providing precise reporting and recommendations. - 10%
• Ensure adherence to infection control standards; properly disinfect and sterilize equipment between uses. - 10%
• Utilize resources responsibly, including supplies and time.

Supervision and Management

This position does not include management duties and reports to supervisory personnel.

Required Qualifications

Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program or eligible for licensure in South Carolina, or a senior student graduating within the next three months.

Certifications and Licenses

Candidates must hold a valid Respiratory Care Practitioner license in South Carolina or be eligible for licensure, alongside a required BLS certification. NBRC credentials should be maintained. Employees hired prior to June 2016 may hold Certified Respiratory Therapist credentials. Those hired from June 2016 onward must pass the Therapist Multiple Choice Exam and Clinical Simulation Exam within their first 6 months of employment. Failure to complete the clinical simulation exam will result in termination.

NRP and PALS certifications are required in the Children's Hospital before working independently in the NICU and PICU.
