  • Weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime may be required based on staffing needs.
Job Summary:

The Specimen Technician (SPT I) provides essential support within the Specimen Processing Department by performing specimen intake, data entry, preparation, and distribution tasks that maintain workflow accuracy and customer satisfaction. This role requires strong organizational skills, adherence to safety and compliance guidelines, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced production environment with shifting daily priorities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform general specimen processing functions including A-station work, presort, pickup/delivery of specimens, aliquoting, imaging/microfilming, and centrifugation.
  • Enter specimen and test data with accuracy, meeting departmental productivity standards (6,000 keystrokes/hour).
  • Learn and apply knowledge of specimen types and associated test requirements.
  • Follow compliance regulations for test ordering, which may change daily.
  • Maintain accuracy, speed, and quality while managing multiple tasks in a high-volume production environment.
  • Work effectively within a biohazard environment while practicing safe handling procedures.
  • Communicate clearly with team members and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adapt to routine operational changes.
  • Support customer satisfaction by ensuring quality, timeliness, and precision of specimen processing activities.
Required Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • No prior experience required.
Nice-to-Have Experience:
  • Previous laboratory or hospital laboratory experience.
  • Experience in specimen processing or clinical lab environments.
  • Medical background or familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Production environment experience.
Required Skills:
  • Strong data entry accuracy
  • Ability to work in biohazard and production environments
  • Basic computer proficiency

  • Knowledge of specimen types and laboratory testing
