ASSISTANT FOOD SERVICE MANAGER

AFSCME GRADE 10

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides food preparation and lunch service for Council on Aging/Senior Center participants. Prepares refreshments for Coffee Station area, special events, classes, and activities. Performs a variety of meal preparation and cleaning duties. Performs all other related or similar duties as required.

SUPERVISION

Works under the general supervision of the Food Service Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In the absence of the Food Service Manager, assumes full responsibility of food preparation, kitchen and dining room clean-up, and meal coordination with Senior Center staff for congregate and grab-n-go meal service.
  • Assists Food Service Manager with planning the weekly menu and local grocery store shopping. Assists in planning and serving special functions.
  • Prepares food, including but not limited to entrées, side dishes, desserts and beverages, for meal programs, activities, educational programs and evening/weekend programs in large quantities by following recipes and using various kitchen equipment within standard operating procedures. Assists other food services staff with the preparation of more complex dishes.
  • Evaluates food for quality, quantity, appearance, temperature, and taste to determine proper freshness, preparation, portioning and adherence with the safe handling of food items in accordance with ServSafe standards.
  • Prepares and maintains necessary items for coffee station area, for congregate and grab-and-go meal service, special events, and Senior Center programs and activities.
  • Transports food to and from storage areas, loads food carts, transports food to serving areas, and plates food.
  • Conducts daily cleanup of food preparation areas including cooking equipment, work areas, counters, and linens using available equipment and established methods to maintain department cleanliness and sanitation standards.
  • Maintains kitchen/dining stocks, supplies and merchandise, including assisting with the delivery and safe storing of items and food orders.
  • Assures the cleanliness of the dining room area. Coordinating with custodial staff to ensure the floor is swept and/or vacuumed following meals and special programs.
  • Assists with general Senior Center program operations on an as needed basis including, but not limited to, assisting at special events and parties, and assisting other staff and volunteers.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed, or as a situation dictates.
OTHER ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs varied duties of a routine nature following acceptable standards of quality and performance. Plans and carries out daily work with a degree of independence and in accordance with standard department practices as well as sanitary and safety rules and regulations governing the operations of the department.
  • Operates various kinds of kitchen equipment.
  • Employee has frequent contact with volunteers, older adults, delivery personnel, and other staff members.
  • Employee has access to confidential information pertaining to the provision of meal services to patrons.
  • Errors could result in delay or loss of service, adverse public relations, and monetary loss to the City.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED. Two years general food preparation or cooking experience, preferably in a cafeteria or restaurant setting; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have ServSafe Certification. Must be CPR/AED certified.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Basic knowledge of food preparation and cooking practices, procedures, and regulations.
  • Must possess the ability to work in a flexible manner, the ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, and the ability to receive, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills.


PHYSICAL, MOTOR AND VISUAL SKILLS

Work is performed in a kitchen setting, where there is exposure to potential hazards and discomforts frequently found in a kitchen environment, and subject to moderate noise and exposure to hot and cold temperatures. A significant amount of time is spent standing, walking, stooping, or reaching with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms to lift food items. Frequently required to lift up to 60 pounds. Normal vision requirements. Required to operate kitchen equipment in a safe manner and in accordance with manufacturer's operating instructions.

This position is fully financed by a state grant from the Executive Office of Elder Affairs and is contingent upon receiving this grant.
