The Department of Radiation Oncology of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, ranked top 5th in NIH research funding, is recruiting for a Radiation Oncologist at the Assistant/Associate/Professor level. The department provides Radiation Oncology services at several practice settings and has a need for a full-time faculty physician scientist. The ideal candidate will have a track record of continuous and/or renewal of extramural funding and have an active clinical practice. Based on the candidate’s experience, the opportunity to hold a departmental leadership position, such as Vice-Chair, could be made available. This faculty position will provide strategic vision for our department’s research endeavors. These include our Division of Translational Radiation Sciences [DTRS], with a distinguished history of achievement and grant/contract funding in cellular responses to DNA damage, development of original preclinical models of radiation effects on normal tissue, and medical countermeasures research; and the collaborative translational efforts of our large Medical Physics team, noted for introduction of innovative technologies and standard setting in quality assurance measures. The position will also work closely with our nationally recognized clinical research team and participate in providing patient care at the Maryland Proton Treatment Center and/or another of our clinical sites. The Department of Radiation Oncology’s clinical program has 21 physicians, a fellow and 12 residents. The University of Maryland Medical Center is in downtown Baltimore, within the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, close to the attractions of the Inner Harbor waterfront and professional sports stadiums. The department has 6 well-integrated community programs. Our current clinical program has 15 linear accelerators, 8 multi-slice large bore CT simulators, an MRI, 4 HDR units, and active programs in protons, Hyperthermia, Brachytherapy, SRS/SBRT, Radioembolization, Gamma Pod and Radiopharmaceuticals. There are several campus-wide shared resources including small-animal imaging CT, PET and MR scanners. Medical Physics led by Dr. Amit Sawant, has 33 medical physics faculty, 26 dosimetrists, 3 physics residents, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and 6 information systems and technology staff. All practice sites are connected via a state-of-the-art telemedicine network facilitating interactions between faculty and staff. Research programs include the development of new treatment planning and delivery techniques, tumor motion management, inter-fraction image guidance strategies, two SARRPs and research vaults dedicated to photon and proton related research. The division of medical physics has research space co-located with DTRS. The department occupies >20,000 sq. ft. of purpose-built, fully renovated, access-controlled wet laboratory, animal research and dry lab space for successful execution of translational radiobiological/physics research. This salary range does not include all components of the Radiation Oncology faculty compensation program or pay from participation in Radiation Oncology variable compensation programs.
