Description
The City of Sioux City Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic-In-Training to join our team.
Under guidance and direction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Supervisor, assists with the routine maintenance and repair of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and related facilities and equipment.
This position assists in performing maintenance and repair work on all plant facilities, pumps, engines, motors, chemical feeders, filters, bar screens, valves, pipes, heat exchangers, air compressors, heating/cooling equipment, aeration equipment, and all other major mechanical and hydraulic equipment found in a Wastewater Treatment facility and collection system. Other duties are outlined in this position description.
Special Requirements: Must obtain an Iowa Grade 1 Wastewater System Certificate within 24 months of appointment.

This position will work from Monday through Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm. Must be able to work outside normal working hours to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. On-call if needed.
Our employees are required to reside within 30 miles of the City of Sioux City limits which extends to other adjoining states; Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.

Duties
- Assists in performing maintenance and repair work on all plant facilities, pumps, engines, motors, chemical feeders, filters, bar screens, valves, pipes, heat exchangers, air compressors, heating/cooling equipment, aeration equipment, and all other major mechanical and hydraulic equipment found in a wastewater treatment facility and collection system.
- Checks grease charts and bearing temperatures to assure proper maintenance of equipment.
- Changes spark plugs, oil and related equipment.
- Welds cast iron, steel, brass, copper, and aluminum.
- Assists in the installation of new equipment.
- Monitors facilities and equipment to identify and repair leaks or other malfunctions.
- Operates, and adjusts pumps and machinery.
- Maintains log of maintenance activities, repairs, and operations.
- Keeps records and makes reports.
- Maintains buildings and grounds.
- Performs janitorial work.
- Washes and maintains filters.
- Collects water samples.
- Monitors plant operation and controls; makes adjustments to maintain proper operation.
- Maintains regular and punctual attendance and all "on-call' rotations as assigned; may be required to work evenings, weekends, and holiday when the interests of the employer require.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with officials, other agencies, fellow employees, and the general public.
- Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in the state of a declared emergency.
Qualifications
Cognitive Demands, Skills and Abilities: Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you; ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer); ability to see details at a distance; ability to identify and understand the speech of another person; ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
Job Knowledge: Requires a general knowledge of the maintenance and repair of machinery and related mechanical equipment; knowledge of standard safety practices; some knowledge of the wastewater treatment system, personal computers and related software, and routine chemical tests for water quality. The ability to read meters, gauges and charts and maintain routine records; operate pumps, hand and power tools, mowers, computers, and small trucks; plan and complete assigned work.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to employees. Requires the ability to speak clearly, distinctly, and effectively with fellow employees; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process and procedures; and follow verbal and written instructions.
Physical Requirements: The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and smell. Ability to quickly move hands, hands together with arms, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects, ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time; this involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue, ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing, ability to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with body, arms and/or legs.
Regularly lifts up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment: Work is typically performed inside and/or outside and includes there to be a potential for exposure to disagreeable environmental factors. Such factors included being exposed to dampness, wetness, humidity, toxic/caustic substances, grease, dirt, fumes, gasses, odors, insects, unrestrained animals, cold, heat, noise, mechanical, chemical, and electrical hazards, atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system, confined spaces, and may require the use of a respirator. The employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in certain areas of the work environment may be loud. Visits to locations within the community whose environment may be different. Travel in all types of weather extremes to perform job duties, attend training, meetings, conferences, and workshops; must be mobile and able to visit businesses within the metro area.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Possession of a valid driver's license.
Graduation from standard high school or GED. Experience in mechanical maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery and experience in a water or wastewater facility preferred.
