The Opportunity:

The School of Design and Construction (SDC) at Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for a full-time faculty member as a continuous-career track (non-tenure track) Assistant Professor. We seek candidates who are student-centered, collaborative, possess relevant industry experience, and are technologically and professionally competent.

The Construction Management (CM) program exists within the SDC, which is comprised of academic degree programs in Architecture, Construction Management, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture. The SDC is housed within the Voiland College of Engineering & Architecture (VCEA), providing access and potential collaborations with faculty and students in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, and more. The curriculum is a four-year professional program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management. Upon completion of prerequisite courses, pre-professional students must apply after their first year to be admitted into the program and complete the final three years. The CM program has a robust in-house student internship and full-time recruiting program, active industry partners, and an engaged advisory board. Additionally, many non-CM students enroll in our CM Minor program from many disciplines including Business, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, and Civil Engineering.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In this role, you will teach lecture, lab, and seminar courses central to the core CM curriculum in the CM (B.S.) program and allied disciplines within the SDC. Courses include, but are not limited to, materials and methods, project management/delivery, construction cost accounting, construction law, estimating, BIM/VDC, and scheduling.

Additionally, faculty are expected to participate in program and SDC committees, mentor students, and serve as a faculty advisor for student groups and/or coach competition teams. The ability to conduct research and scholarly activities in a defined area of interest is beneficial but not required. This is a 100% FTE position with an 80% Teaching and 20% Service workload distribution. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses central to the construction management core curriculum. Those with multidisciplinary teaching interests are encouraged to apply.

Additional Information:

Academic Year (9-month) Salary: $95,000 - $105,000 Commensurate with experience and qualifications

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Relevant construction industry experience in the U.S. and a proven record of collaborative work within the construction industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach core curriculum courses (e.g. materials and methods, project management/project delivery, construction cost accounting, construction law, estimating, BIM/VDC, and scheduling) in the undergraduate B.S. Construction Management program and allied disciplines in the school.
  • Willingness and ability to engage with students and industry partners, including the mentorship of students from a wide range of disciplines and academic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:
  • Five (5) or more years of domestic construction and/or engineering experience, a bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, architecture or a related field, as well as a Master of Business Administration or equivalent; OR
  • Five (5) or more years of domestic construction and/or engineering experience, and a master's degree in construction management, engineering, architecture or a related field; OR
  • Ten (10) or more years of domestic construction and/or engineering experience, and a bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, architecture or a related field.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional registration/certification such as PE, AIA, LEED, WELL, CPC, PMP, or DBIA.
  • Demonstrated higher education teaching experience in a construction management program.
  • Five (5) or more years of construction industry experience in one or more of the following construction market sectors: commercial, large-scale residential construction, heavy civil, infrastructure, or specialty contracting.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including collaboration and teamwork.
