Fort Belvoir, VA, United States Leidos Full time

Description

Join Leidos' NISC IV program as an Electrical/Spectrum Engineer specializing in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). In this role, you will support the FAA Spectrum Engineering Services Group at FAA Headquarters in Washington, DC, ensuring that our nation's aviation systems operate without interference.

The Spectrum Engineering Group is dedicated to securing and managing civil aviation spectrum resources. As UAS operations grow, we need engineers who can navigate the complexities of RF characteristics, propagation, and regulatory frameworks that pertain to UAS command-and-control, payload data links, and various systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in coordinating and executing frequency assignment actions for FAA and non-FAA entities, ensuring compliance with FAA Orders and established engineering standards.
  • Analyze UAS frequencies for potential interference with FAA communications and navigation systems.
  • Identify UAS-related interference risks and recommend technical mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct detailed technical analyses for both airborne and ground-based UAS systems, including propagation modeling and interference potential.
  • Evaluate scenarios such as BVLOS operations and the impact of airborne transmitters on aviation systems.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of technical data related to UAS operations.
  • Review UAS operations in both federal and non-federal bands, adhering to FAA and international guidelines.
  • Support domestic and international spectrum certification processes.
  • Contribute to studies and planning efforts regarding the expansion of UAS operations within various airspaces.
  • Engage in global harmonization initiatives for UAS communications and non-payload spectrum usage.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related technical field, with formal spectrum management training or equivalent military experience acceptable.
  • 3+ years of experience in UAS integration, spectrum engineering, or aviation systems planning.
  • Knowledge of UAS command-and-control links, RF interference, and propagation principles.
  • Experience in propagation modeling and electromagnetic compatibility studies.
  • Proficiency in applying spectrum-engineering methodologies to emerging UAS technologies.
  • Ability to learn and use FAA-specific tools and software.
  • U.S. citizenship and active Secret clearance required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with spectrum-engineering principles as they pertain to aviation systems.
  • Understanding of the spectrum requirements for UAS, Urban Air Mobility, and Advanced Air Mobility.
  • Knowledge of the NTIA Redbook and relevant FAA orders and regulations.
  • Experience with Spectrum XXI or similar federal spectrum management tools is a plus.

At Leidos, we are looking for innovators who are ready to challenge the status quo and drive change. If you are ready to contribute to the future of aviation technology, apply today
