PGS Worldwide is actively recruiting for a Principal Software Engineer to support an Internal Research and Development (IRAD) program for a leading aerospace and defense client. This is a 6-month contract-to-hire opportunity located in Huntsville, AL. We are seeking a senior-level expert with over 12 years of experience to lead the development of mathematics- and physics-intensive algorithms for mission-critical missile defense systems.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Security Clearance: Must have a current, active DoD Secret security clearance (or Interim Secret) to start.
  • Experience/Education: Bachelor's degree in a STEM field with 12+ years of related experience; OR Master's degree with 10+ years; OR PhD with 8+ years.
  • Core Development: Recent and extensive experience developing software in C++ or Java.
  • Containerization: Proven experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and container orchestration.
  • Scripting: Recent experience with MATLAB and/or Python.
  • Operating Systems: extensive experience working within Unix/Linux environments.
  • Work Environment: Must be able to support an in-person / closed-area work environment.
Preferred Skills
  • Advanced degree in Mathematics, Physics, or Computer Science.
  • Strong background in Math and Physics (specifically for algorithm development).
  • Experience with Battle Management or Fire Control systems.
  • Familiarity with the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA).
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools (Jenkins, GitLab, GitHub, Atlassian Suite).
  • Knowledge of Behavior Driven Development (BDD) using tools like Gherkin and Cucumber.
  • Experience with Apache Kafka, Prometheus, Grafana, Terraform, or Ansible.
Job Responsibilities In this role, you will join the Missile Defense Integration Business Unit. You will work in a collaborative environment to understand system requirements and implement complex solutions that drive future defense capabilities.
  • Design and implement new software capabilities and algorithms, many of which are mathematics- and physics-intensive.
  • Lead software development efforts within a Research and Development (IRAD) setting.
  • Develop and deploy containerized applications in distributed environments.
  • Support reviews of requirements and test cases developed for software capabilities.
  • Mentor junior engineers and collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve complex technical challenges.
