The Battery Storage Substation Project Engineer will be responsible for the technical planning, design, and execution of battery energy storage system (BESS) projects, with a focus on substations. This role will collaborate with project management and construction teams to ensure that the engineering aspects of the project meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards. The Project Engineer will also provide technical expertise in electrical design, equipment selection, and system integration to ensure successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design & Engineering:
- Develop and review detailed designs and specifications for battery storage and substation systems.
- Ensure that engineering designs comply with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and project objectives.
- Oversee the selection and integration of electrical components, such as transformers, inverters, switchgear, and control systems.
- Perform load calculations, fault current analysis, protection coordination studies, and other engineering assessments.
- Project Support:
- Support the Project Manager in developing engineering scope, schedules, and budgets.
- Provide engineering input during project planning, execution, and commissioning phases.
- Assist in the preparation of technical documentation, including engineering drawings, reports, and calculations.
- Collaborate with procurement teams to ensure proper selection and delivery of equipment.
- Site Support & Coordination:
- Conduct site visits to monitor construction progress, ensure compliance with design specifications, and provide technical support.
- Work closely with construction teams, contractors, and field engineers to resolve design or engineering issues during installation and commissioning.
- Participate in testing, commissioning, and start-up activities, ensuring that systems perform as expected.
- Compliance & Standards:
- Ensure all engineering work adheres to applicable safety, quality, and environmental regulations.
- Coordinate with regulatory bodies and utility companies to ensure project designs meet grid interconnection and performance standards.
- Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and regulatory changes that impact battery storage and substation projects.
- Risk Management & Problem-Solving:
- Identify potential engineering risks and collaborate with project teams to develop mitigation strategies.
- Troubleshoot technical issues that arise during design, construction, or commissioning phases.
- Implement design modifications or improvements as needed to address unforeseen challenges.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Prepare and maintain comprehensive engineering documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide technical reports and updates to project management and stakeholders.
- Ensure that all final designs and documentation are properly archived for future reference and regulatory compliance.
- Education:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Civil Engineering, or related field (Master's preferred). - Experience:
- 3+ years of experience in engineering roles related to utility-scale energy projects, with a focus on substations or battery energy storage systems.
- Experience with electrical system design, substation layouts, and grid interconnection requirements.
- Familiarity with renewable energy systems, energy storage technologies, and power distribution is preferred.
- Skills:
- Strong technical knowledge of electrical engineering principles, particularly in power systems, transformers, switchgear, and protection systems.
- Proficiency with engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, ETAP, SKM Power Tools) and other relevant tools for system design and analysis.
- Ability to work closely with multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple engineering tasks concurrently.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to project-specific challenges.
- Excellent communication skills for preparing technical documentation and collaborating with stakeholders.
- EIT (Engineer in Training) or PE (Professional Engineer) certification preferred.
- OSHA 10 or other relevant safety certifications is a plus.
- Occasional travel to project sites for inspections, site support, and commissioning activities.
- The role may require working in outdoor or remote environments during site visits.
- Flexibility to work extended hours when necessary to meet project deadlines.
