Full-Spectrum Doula- FULL TIME

Chicago, IL, United States Partum Health Full time
The Role:

Partum Health is thrilled to partner with a hospital system to launch a doula integration program on their Labor & Delivery floor. We are hiring five full-time, hospital-based doulas to provide 24/7 in-person support to birthing patients-serving those whose care is covered by insurance-during labor in the L&D unit, and occasionally in the postpartum unit.

This is a full-time position with salary, benefits, and consistent scheduling. As a doula, you'll be employed by Partum Health but deployed exclusively at the hospital . Those interested in this position must be comfortable working in a clinical setting and collaborating closely with healthcare professionals across disciplines.

What You'll Do
  • Provide continuous labor support on the L&D floor
  • Work collaboratively with the clinical team (nurses, OBs, midwives, residents) in a high-acuity hospital setting and be available for patient assignment by Charge Nurse (after collaboration with the physician and midwifery teams) upon labor admission. This position provides non-medical emotional, physical, and educational support. Doulas do not perform clinical tasks or provide medical advice.
  • Support patients in early and active labor, in addition to postpartum, all in an inpatient setting at a high volume hospital
  • Deliver evidence-based, respectful care aligned with hospital protocols and doula best practices, providing the client with emotional, physical, and educational support. Must demonstrate trauma-informed care, cultural humility, de-escalation skills, and strong patient-experience standards.
    • Provide in-person physical, emotional, and educational support during labor and delivery, including hands-on comfort measures such as massage, counter-pressure, and use of a birthing ball.
    • Assist with positioning techniques to support labor progress and comfort (e.g., using a peanut ball, encouraging movement, laboring in the bath or shower).
    • Help the birthing person advocate for themselves by reinforcing birth preferences and facilitating communication with the clinical team.
    • Listen to the concerns and questions of the client and their family in a kind, non-judgmental way, and offer evidence-based, non-medical advice.
    • Provide practical and emotional support throughout the childbirth process, including reassurance and real-time coping strategies.
    • Support the birthing person during epidural anesthesia placement should they desire regional anesthesia.
    • Support the birthing person in the operating room should a Cesarean Delivery be required, including emotional support and initiating skin-to-skin contact.
    • Round on postpartum patients to provide education, support, and lactation guidance in collaboration with the nurses and lactation consultants.
  • Keep up to date on care protocols by conducting research, networking with other Doulas, and attending workshops and lectures. Participation in unit huddles, interdisciplinary communication, and post-event debriefings as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, adaptability, and collaboration skills, including the ability to give and receive feedback from Labor & Delivery staff in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Anticipate the emotional and physical needs of the birthing person with attentiveness, patience, and empathy.
  • Build trust and rapport quickly with clients and families through warmth, active listening, and a calming bedside manner.
  • Maintain charting notes following HIPAA protocols. Must complete all hospital-required learning modules annually, including HIPAA, infection control, and patient safety.
Success (performance measures) in the role defined by: patient satisfaction, contribution to improving patient outcomes, collaboration feedback, attendance, and documentation quality.

Schedule
  • Work three 12-hour shifts per week as scheduled by Partum Health site coordinator - requirement to be available per scheduled assignments
  • Day and night shifts opportunities available - doulas are requested to prioritize one or the other during interviews. Requested shift not necessarily guaranteed.
  • Role may require holiday/weekend rotations, attendance at meetings, and shift extensions for active labor support.
