General
A senior accountant has the primary responsibility for completion of client accounting and tax services within budget, supervising one or more staff accountants as necessary, and presenting the tax workpapers and returns for review to a manager or partner.
Essential Performance Functions
- Takes a leading role in the technical and professional development of the staff accountants and interns. Establishes and communicates roles and expectations for staff accountants at the start of the project and provides candid and constructive feedback on the work completed.
- Review returns prepared by staff accountants and assume responsibility for the completion of the work product. This requires the knowledge, judgment and ability to delegate, monitor progress, provide on-the-job training and feedback. A reviewed return should be free of errors.
- Begins to build strong relationships and a high level of credibility with the partners, managers and staff. Builds trust with firm leadership by completing work accurately, timely and consistently. Functions effectively in a team environment.
- Builds a strong relationship with firm clients. Properly communicates with clients to answer questions and request documents needed for the completion of work. Provides superior client service by returning calls and emails promptly.
- Participates in the firm's business development activities by identifying new client prospects and expanded service opportunities to existing clients. Seniors should begin to identify needs the client may not recognize.
- Actively participates in professional, business and/or community organizations. Seniors should build a strong network of professionals, both within the firm and outside the firm. Seniors should allocate at least 50 hours per year building and maintaining their network.
- Preparation of complex federal and state tax returns. The senior should be able to present work to a manager or partner for review with the expectation that few changes will be required. Research of complex tax issues should be completed prior to submission for review.
- Analyze and prepare responses to IRS and State Tax agencies.
- Analyze entity documents such as company agreements and determine appropriate tax treatment.
- Takes responsibility for monitoring due dates, contacting clients and troubleshooting on engagements assigned to them on a recurring basis.
- Productivity: Approximately 1,575 hours billable with realization of approximately 80% or more.
- Seeks challenging opportunities for learning and expansion of one's personal knowledge bank. He or she should be very comfortable discussing these topics.
- Monitors the workload of all team members; adjusts and redistributes assignments accordingly; takes on additional work as needed to help the team; shows respect for all members of the team.
- Makes a conscious effort to help train team members and share knowledge. Team members should view senior accountants as first line leaders within the firm.
- Stays current on technical matters.
- Identifies areas for improvement on return processes and implements changes that improve efficiency.
- Helps create and maintain a positive, fun and professional work environment.
- Is organized.
- Takes notes of assigned tasks and completes the tasks in a timely manner the first time. Tasks can be defined in large (tax returns, other projects, etc.) or small (actions to take that are mentioned in casual conversation) terms. He/she should always be prepared to take notes in order to follow up on any tasks assigned.
- Master's or Bachelor's degree in accounting.
- Proficiency with computer, spreadsheet software programs and calculator.
- Well rounded knowledge of accounting principles and personal income taxes
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely
