The Senate Sergeant at Arms is a non-partisan office that aids the operation of the Wisconsin State Senate. We are located in the State Capitol building in beautiful downtown Madison, Wisconsin.
The Senate Sergeant at Arms Office is currently accepting applications for an Operations Officer to join the Wisconsin State Legislature. This is full-time benefitted position expected to last approximately until October of 2026. Starting annual salary is $69,648.
Position Summary
The Sergeant at Arms office thrives in a highly professional work environment and supports the entire State Senate. The Operations Officer is a nonpartisan, management level position within the Sergeant at Arms' Office. The Operations Officer assists the Sergeant at Arms as a coordinator of the Continuity of Operations (COOP) and the Continuity of Government (COOG) programs, is responsible for overseeing key and access card records for all Senate employees, performs administrative support work for the office, assists in the hiring of Messenger staff, and aids with the development of long-term office planning. This position's work is performed under the direction of the Sergeant at Arms and Deputy Sergeant at Arms.
Salary Information
Starting annual salary is $69,648.
Job Details
-Oversees use of all Senate hearing rooms, the Senate Chamber, and the Senate Parlor.
-Serve as a contact for Senate and Joint Committee hearings.
-Travel in-state with Senate committees, as necessary.
-Issue and collect keys for all Senate employees.
-Work with the locksmith to ensure Senate security is maintained.
-Assists Sergeant as a contact for all large security projects for the Senate.
-Assist with the Sergeant at Arms' central office.
-Assist with session printing and bulk mailings.
-Assist Managing audio-visual and telecommunications usage and serviceability.
-Develop, promote, conduct, implement, and evaluate the safety and security training and orientation programs for Sergeant at Arms' employees.
-Provide advice to the Sergeant at Arms, Deputy Sergeant at Arms, Senate Chief Clerk, Senators, and Senate Staff on security related matters according to the Sergeant at Arms direction.
-Aid the Sergeant at Arms and Deputy Sergeant at Arms with the development of long-term office planning, as well as operational planning for the Senate.
-Provide other assistance to the Sergeant at Arms and Deputy Sergeant at Arms, as necessary/required.
-Oversee cyber related security issues towards Senators.
-Oversee and manage Mail position and all security functions with DOA relating to mail.
Qualifications
Required:
-Excellent interpersonal skills.
-Ability to effectively/efficiently communicate solutions and other information to Senators, staff, and the general public.
-Ability to work in a nonpartisan environment.
-Ability to operate in a professional and confidential manner, while working with Senators and Senate staff in the performance of assigned duties.
-Excellent supervisory/management skills.
-Ability to effectively/efficiently supervise a large staff of full time and part time employees performing a wide range of duties.
-Ability to be forward thinking and facilitate process improvements in a team setting, as necessary.
-Comprehensive knowledge of the operation of legislative bodies and experience with providing security in a public facility.
-Comprehensive knowledge of Senate legislative rules and procedures.
-Comprehensive knowledge of all staff duties within the office.
-Expert level skills related to physical security systems.
-Ability to provide excellent customer service to Senators, staff, and the general public.
-Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
-Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, including familiarity with word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications, as necessary.
-Repetitive movement of hands and fingers - typing and/or writing.
-Occasional to frequent sitting, walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching.
-Reach with hands and arms.
-Ability to stand for long periods of time
-Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
Minimum Training and Experience
-Graduate of a college/university of recognized standing, or an equivalent combination of training and experience, including military service.
-Two (2) years of experience working for a legislative body and two (2) years of experience working in an intelligence role within law enforcement or the military, or an equivalent combination of similar training and experience.
