Key Responsibilities

Fiber Splicing and Installation
  • Perform single and ribbon fusion splicing using Fujikura splicing equipment to achieve low-loss, high-quality connections.
  • Execute mid-sheath (ring-cut) splicing on high-count cables (up to 3456ct) for maintenance or expansion.
  • Prepare splice cases, trays, closures, and buffer tubes according to engineering documentation.
  • Adhere to fiber color codes, routing, bend radius, and cleanliness standards.
  • Conduct aerial, underground, and building-entry splicing as required by project scope.
  • Follow all Vertical and client splicing specifications and QA/QC standards.
Testing and Troubleshooting
  • Perform optical testing using EXFO and Anritsu equipment, including:
    • Optical Power Meter and Light Source Tests (OLTS / Insertion Loss)
    • Optical Return Loss (ORL) to verify end-to-end reflectance levels
    • OTDR Short Shot for near-end event verification
    • OTDR Long Shot for full-span analysis and fault detection
    • End-to-End Continuity and Polarity Testing
  • Identify and correct issues such as fiber breaks, high-loss events, or reflectance problems.
  • Generate and analyze test results using Fast Reporter or comparable tools for submission to clients.
Advanced Fiber Characterization
  • Conduct or support Chromatic Dispersion (CD) testing to measure wavelength propagation and ensure compatibility with high-speed transmission systems.
  • Perform Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) testing to evaluate pulse delay variance and overall fiber quality for 10G/40G/100G systems.
  • Record, analyze, and document CD and PMD test results to meet customer and industry specifications.
Documentation and Reporting
  • Maintain accurate as-built documentation, splice logs, and cable assignment records.
  • Submit detailed test reports, labeled diagrams, and QA/QC documentation to the project manager.
  • Ensure compliance with Vertical's reporting standards and customer requirements.
Safety and Compliance
  • Follow all OSHA safety protocols, company policies, and client-specific safety programs.
  • Use appropriate PPE and maintain clean, organized work areas.
  • Report hazards, incidents, or unsafe conditions immediately.
Work Schedule and Travel
  • Must be willing to work any time of day or night, including weekends, as project needs dictate.
  • Position requires flexibility to travel outside normal commuting distance, often on a two-weeks-on / three-days-off rotation.
  • Lodging, travel, and per diem provided per company policy.
  • Work environments include indoor facilities, outdoor job sites, and diverse weather conditions.
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience splicing and testing fiber optic networks (OSP/ISP).
  • Proven proficiency with Fujikura fusion splicers and EXFO/Anritsu test equipment.
  • Strong understanding of fiber optic theory, construction methods, and color codes.
  • Proficient with Fast Reporter or similar test reporting software.
  • Skilled in reading and interpreting network diagrams, splice schematics, and fiber assignments.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, and perform physically demanding tasks.
Preferred Experience and Certifications
  • Experience with Zayo, DF&I, or other dark fiber providers (Preferred).
  • Familiarity with live fiber maintenance windows and outage coordination.
  • FOA CFOT/CFOS-T, ETA FOI, or equivalent certification (Preferred).
  • OSHA 10/30, CPR/First Aid (Preferred)
  • Experience installing basket trays, bolting cabinets, and pulling fiber through conduits (preferred).
