School Counselor Intern

REPORTS TO: Assigned CCS Task Supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS: Enrolled in current Masters Program at an ALL(Alliance for Learning and Leading) Grant Participating University
JOB GOAL: The field internship experience is the portion of a counselor's preparation program that allows him/her/them to implement within the schools what has been learned in classes throughout their program. The primary purpose of the field experience is to provide students with the opportunity to develop skills in individual and group counseling, teacher and family consultation, and classroom guidance planning as well as leadership, advocacy, collaboration, and coordination of counseling and classroom lesson activities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop knowledge of high school and college admissions requirements; (ex: FAFSA, Residency Determination) and consult with students on post-secondary options. Guide students on college and financial aid applications.
DIRECT STUDENT SERVICES:
Instruction
- Prepare and participate in classroom presentations with the counseling team.
- Under the direction of the school counselor, deliver short-term school-based services to general education students.
- Learn and participate in academic reviews for student progress, including transcript reviews, scheduling, credit recovery options, and planning for post-secondary options.
- Possess a beginning working knowledge of intervention and prevention models.
Implement interventions for the purposes of fostering better social-emotional and academic skills. - Consistently and routinely update case files for students on his/her caseload. Utilize various tracking tools and school information systems to keep updated on student progress.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned and in alignment with university program criteria and the needs of the school as deemed appropriate by the school-based administration, Executive Director of Student Services, and/or Building Principal.
Consultation
- Consult with task supervisor on crisis and child abuse reporting when necessary.
- If needed, under the direction of the site administrator, attend/participate in Student Services Team (SST), 504, and Individual Education Plan (IEP)meetings.
- Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators
concerns and needs.
Collaboration
- Collaborate with the school task supervisor on a learning plan and goals for the internship.
- Collaborate with the school on universal interventions for students such as peer mediation, conflict mediation, academic interventions, etc.
- Collaborate with parents, school site teachers, staff, and other stakeholders to promote student growth and development.
- Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational and career planning.
- Attend staff meetings to develop an understanding of programs and processes and to contribute to future programming.
- Continually improve counseling skills by seeking constructive feedback and professional development opportunities.
- Exhibit positive rapport with students and school personnel.
- Provides support for regular check-in and preventive support services for the needs of foster youth, adopted, homeless or McKinney-Vento students.
- Establishes a working relationship with parents and members of the school community.
- Informs parents of available community resources.
- School day schedules vary and professional school counselors often work beyond the student schedule. Your site placement will begin in August and conclude in June (the academic calendar for that school year).
- Work on site at least 20 hours per week for the duration of the academic year.
- Participation in set County Wide Professional Development days throughout the year.
- Paid internship is $17.00 an hour, which is paid in monthly increments.
- Attend monthly school counseling department-level meetings with the School Counseling Coordinator to collaborate, share, and learn about current educational counseling practices.
- Attend bi-weekly consultations that support professional growth and development and that ensure proper preparation and practice competency.
- Attend County-wide Professional Development days attended by all student services staff.
- Attend virtual office hours held by Student Services district personnel.
- Attend training regarding 504s, SST, CSSR-S, Child abuse, etc.
- Attend training that specializes in at-risk populations (foster youth, adopted, homeless, or McKinney-Vento students) to help promote resources and services.
- Attend the in-service training modules for the School-Based Mental Health certification program that is designed for all CCS Student Services professionals (e.g., school counselors, school psychologists, and school social workers).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with parents, staff, and community leaders.
Must have finger dexterity and be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Background check with local and state law enforcement agencies required.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
