A hospital plumber is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing all plumbing systems within a hospital facility, including water supply lines, drainage pipes, medical gas lines, and fixtures, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of plumbing systems critical to patient care and staff hygiene, while adhering to strict sanitation and safety regulations.

Standard Work Duties: Plumber
  • Installation and repair: Install new plumbing fixtures, pipes, and systems in accordance with hospital blueprints and codes; repair leaks, clogs, and malfunctioning plumbing components in patient rooms, operating rooms, restrooms, and other areas.
  • Maintenance: Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on plumbing systems, including backflow prevention devices, to identify potential issues and prevent breakdowns. Must inspect and test facility plumbing components for proper operation, and working condition as indicated in preventive maintenance (PM) procedures. Must complete assigned PM's by their due date, and maintain, and complete the proper documentation associated with those PM's.
  • Medical gas systems: Install, maintain, and repair medical gas lines (oxygen, vacuum, nitrous oxide) ensuring proper functionality and safety standards.
  • Waste disposal systems: Maintain and repair drainage systems, including floor drains, grease traps, and sewage lines to prevent clogs and ensure proper waste disposal.
  • Emergency response: May be needed to respond to plumbing emergencies during regular and off-hours, including major leaks, flooding, and system failures, to minimize disruption to patient care.
  • Compliance: Adhere to all local plumbing codes, hospital safety protocols, and infection control guidelines. Must complete required documentation to meet regulatory agency requirements including all work orders, preventive maintenance, inspection, and testing records.
  • Must interact with patients, visitors, doctors and LRH associates in a professional and respectful manner. Must be able to immediately address issues and appropriately communicate the work that will need to be completed or has been completed.
  • Must be able to give direction and oversight to support vendors and mechanics for repairs and installs.
  • Must perform any other duties as assigned to fulfill basic patient, and staff needs to maintain safety, and functionality of all hospital systems, and work requests.
  • Maintain work environment and shop on a daily basis to provide a safe environment for all staff.


Competencies & Skills

Essential:
  • Physical dexterity with normal sight and hearing.
  • Must be able to adapt to a variety of changing duties as required to support all departments in the hospital, and off-site facilities.
  • Must have a working knowledge of OSHA safety practices
  • Must have a working knowledge of the applicable codes, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used to support the facility.
  • Must have strong plumbing troubleshooting abilities, and the ability to perform preventative maintenance, routine servicing, rebuilding, and repair of plumbing related fixtures/equipment.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers, and diagnostics tools for the purpose of troubleshooting
  • Must be able to interpret, read plumbing prints.

  • Commercial and/or industrial electrical maintenance and repair.

Experience Essential:
• A minimum of three (2) years of experience in commercial/residential plumbing trade work is required.
• Installation, maintaining and repairing of plumbing systems

Experience Preferred:
• Previous healthcare or industrial facility plant maintenance experience.

Licenses Essential:

Valid State of Florida driver's license.

Vocational Plumbing Trade School Certificate of Completion

Licenses Preferred: State plumbers license
