Job Summary

The System Physician Executive - Ambulatory Care and Growth Regions ("SPE") has two primary responsibilities: (i) driving strategic growth across the Southeastern United States, including by developing and cultivating physician relationships and providing operational support across the region in collaboration with senior leadership, and (ii) driving Novant Health's ambulatory care strategy across ASCs, urgent care, freestanding imaging centers, and outpatient pharmacy. Strategic responsibilities include cultivating new physician relationships, maintaining existing physician relationships and acting as the single point of contact for Novant Health, developing physician alignment strategies, defining Institute-specific strategies (e.g., building a new neurosciences program at an existing or future facility), supporting development of proformas related to affiliated practices and other JVs, and building growth strategies across key Institutes. Additionally, the SPE will advance NHE's ambulatory strategy across ASCs, urgent care, and outpatient pharmacy within all regions, serving as a dyad partner to the SVP, Ambulatory Surgery Strategy and Execution and the CEO, Novant Health Urgent Care, and the SVP and President, MedVenta. Finally, the SPE will also be responsible for formulating strategy and driving execution across all Institutes, particularly as it relates to leading development across growth regions; partnering with NHE on acquisitions, Joint Ventures, and affiliations, serving as the physician partner (dyad) for Novant Health Ventures (NHV); leading strategic growth of Novant Health's radiology assets, including managing Novant Health's relationship with MedQuest and all independent radiology groups; providing clinical guidance on new applications of AI and other technologies; supporting Institute leaders engaged in research.

The SPE provides administrative oversight and leadership in a manner that supports the mission, vision, and values of Novant Health. This position will develop and coordinate clinical services across growth regions to provide a unified and comprehensive approach to patient-centered care. The SPE ensures the standardization of best practices and protocols to achieve top decile outcomes, with a focus on quality, safety, and patient experience. Operational responsibilities include managing affiliated groups and independent physician relationships across all growth regions. Priorities include operating precision and financial performance of independent physician operations; leading significant growth of the physician division in partnership with the senior leadership team including new practice creation; setting culture of safety, quality, access, and service in clinics and programs; support of integration efforts (e.g., branding, EMR conversion, quality measures and processes); and cultivation of physician leaders across every level of the regions.

As a dyad partner to the SVP, Ambulatory Surgery Strategy and Execution, the CEO, Novant Health Urgent Care, and the SVP and President, MedVenta the SPE accelerates ambulatory strategy, driving the development and expansion of Novant Health's ASC and urgent care footprint and outpatient pharmacy strategies. The SPE provides clinical guidance on growth strategies and will foster existing and develop new relationships with independent physicians, provider groups, and radiologists providing care across all regions. Specifically, the SPE will partner with the SVP, Ambulatory Surgery Strategy and Execution to set Novant Health's ASC strategy, grow its ASC operating platform, and cultivate relationships with relevant independent groups in core and growth regions. Additionally, the SPE partners with Doctor's Care (DC) and the CEO, Novant Health Urgent Care to expand scope and acuity of care, drive strategic growth, and develop and strengthen relationships with specialists across South Carolina. Finally, the SPE collaborates with the SVP and President, MedVenta to develop and implement innovative outpatient pharmacy strategies in line with Novant Health's broader strategic objectives.

The SPE drives the development and execution of strategic plans across the different Institutes, focusing on development opportunities in growth regions, representing the Institutes in strategic meetings and discussions, and including them in key conversations and plan development as appropriate. The SPE collaborates with relevant cross-functional leaders to ensure that Institute strategic plans: (i) align with enterprise goals, (ii) support a cohesive approach across the Specialty Institutes and CHAWI, (iii) promote exceptional patient experience, and (iv) deliver distinctive quality and safety outcomes. The SPE partners with Institute leaders to ensure effective execution, identifying potential issues and developing remediation strategies as needed.

As the clinical dyad to the SVP, NHE Growth Officer & Managing Director NHV, the SPE will provide guidance and input and potential clinical investments, ensuring strategic alignment with Novant Health's mission and patient care priorities. The SPE will help assess the clinical viability, scalability, and impact of potential investments, ensuring they enhance care delivery, improve outcomes, and align with regulatory standards.

The SPE will be responsible for driving radiology strategy and managing Novant Health's relationship with MedQuest and independent radiology groups (e.g., MRA, TRA, ARA, Delaney Radiology) across all regions (Growth and Core). The SPE will support the growth and development of freestanding radiology sites, identifying opportunities for expansion and ensuring there is appropriate physician coverage. Along with relevant Novant Health leaders, the SPE will represent Novant Health and guide the relationship with MedQuest. The SPE will represent the President, Novant Health Specialty Institutes and COO, NHE Ambulatory, in these dealings. The SPE will be accountable for driving performance management across all MedQuest locations, work with relevant MedQuest leaders to optimize operations and increase patient access. Additionally, the leader will cultivate and manage relationships with independent radiology groups to ensure sufficient access to imaging services for all Novant Health patients.

The SPE will act as a subject matter expert for artificial intelligence (AI) and other technological innovation. Responsibility for engaging with vendors and assessing new opportunities to utilize these resources will belong to the SPE. This would include, but not be limited to, billing and coding, compliance/regulatory, quality, and clinical uses related to AI and other technological advancements.

In addition to external partnerships, the SPE will act as an extension of the NH Institutes. This position will maintain connectivity to Institute goals and priorities and identify the correct timing and approach for Institute Leadership to engage in activities in growth regions. The SPE will also partner with the Institutes to support their work with research as well as provide guidance on overarching strategy, supporting successful development and execution.

In this work the leader will evaluate, embrace, and leverage the unique characteristics of growth regions to create a cohesive (acute, ambulatory, imaging, pharmacy) growth plan that supports Novant Health and its patients and communities. The SPE will drive strategy development for the Institutes, collaborating with dyad partners to expedite strategic plans and accelerate execution. Priority areas of focus will include JVs, ASCs, outpatient imaging, urgent care, outpatient pharmacy, and entry into new regions. More specifically, the SPE will be responsible for identifying, assessing, and executing innovative growth opportunities for and with Institute leadership in core and growth regions.

The SPE will also serve as the primary academic liaison with Clemson University and University of South Carolina (USC), as well as other academic institutions across all growth regions. This position will be responsible for exploring and developing opportunities across growth regions through these and other academic partnerships.

Key to the SPE's success will be the ability to develop strong relationships across Novant Health and work in a highly matrixed environment with multiple partners across collaborative services in related services, referral sources and Novant Health leadership. Qualifications
  • Education: Medical Doctor (MD or DO), required. Board-certified in relevant specialty.
  • Experience: 10+ years Clinical practice with an exemplary clinical track record, required.
  • Licensure/Certification: Current medical license in NC, required.
