Job Description

We are seeking a Director of Enterprise Architecture who will help BYU-Pathway to technically scale from our current 80,000+ active students to over a million students over the next several years. The incumbent will have a massive global impact as they serve our global student population in 188 countries. This position requires deep and broad technical experience as a seasoned professional and seasoned leader, especially in higher education IT.

Under the direction of the CIO, this position is responsible for the overall design and performance of the BYU-Pathway application ecosystem and its alignment with the organization's strategic objectives, focusing on optimal functionality, flexibility, and scalability within budget constraints. This role will also be involved in mentoring and guiding other technical staff members.

Important: This position requires a seasoned technology leader with a minimum of 15 years of full-time technical experience, including at least 10 years in technical leadership, 5 years in an architect role, and 3 years leading development teams. A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent experience) is required. The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, with frequent evening, and weekend work, and travel required to accommodate providing support to a worldwide student population.

Responsibilities

Strategic Architecture Design: Develop and maintain a comprehensive application architecture roadmap and design documents that aligns with the company's business strategy, considering scalability, performance, security, and future technology trends.

Collaboration with Executives, Stakeholders and Teams: Work closely with department directors and vice presidents, business stakeholders, program managers, product managers, project managers, solutions managers, development teams, and especially other architects to ensure alignment between business needs and technical solutions.

Collaboration with System Architects: Work with System Architect and Solutions Managers to:
  • Ensure seamless integration between different systems within the BYU-Pathway's ecosystem and the Church.
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate technology stacks for new applications, considering compatibility with existing systems and future requirements.
  • Design the architecture of complex application solutions, including system components, data flows, and interfaces.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to development teams throughout the application development lifecycle.
  • Identify and address performance bottlenecks in applications, optimizing system efficiency and scalability.
  • Plan and execute strategies for migrating legacy applications to new technologies while maintaining functionality.
Cultivate, develop, and grow BYU-Pathway's low-code engineering team: Mentor, advise, and support the low-code engineering manager and the development of a new team of contracted BYU-Pathway student developers from around the globe.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, closely related field, or equivalent experience.

Experience:
  • 15+ years of technical experience, 10+ in technical leadership roles, 3+ years leading development teams, and 5+ in an architect role.
  • Has experience scaling systems for a large global student/customer population.
  • Must have had key responsibility for the design and implementation of enterprise systems.
  • Deep understanding of enterprise application architecture principles, including service-oriented architecture, microservices, event-driven architecture, and cloud-based architectures.
  • Experience in programming in various languages and on frameworks relevant to the organization's technology stack.
  • Experience with database design, data modeling, and data integration concepts.
Skills:
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve complex technical challenges.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to effectively work with cross-functional teams.
  • Proven ability to lead technical discussions and influence decision-making at all levels.
  • Strong technical expertise in cloud platforms, API development, and application integration.
  • Experience with PaaS, IaaS, and serverless solutions.
  • Knowledge of security measures and best practices for cloud systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to communicate needs and expectations to different levels of management.
  • Significant experience effectively working with vendors.
  • Strong competency in documenting technical processes and explaining them effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred:
  • Experience in a similar role within an educational or non-profit organization
