Summary

The Executive Director (ED) of Educate Texas will have primary responsibility for the leadership, strategy, and operational management of Educate Texas and will articulate a vision that ensures the organization's role in leading a transformation of Texas' public and higher education systems to prepare students for success in school, in the workforce, and in life.

The Educate Texas ED manages the day-to-day operations of the organization, including managing a staff of 55 and an annual budget of approximately $23M. Of critical importance is this executive's role in leading the development of the organization's next strategic plan, which will set out measurable goals and objectives for Educate Texas. This new executive will lead efforts to improve the operational infrastructure to support the new vision and strategy. Overall, they will (1) establish strong relationships with funders and other important internal and external Educate Texas stakeholders, (2) assess, manage and improve the internal operations of the organization, and (3) serve as the face and champion of Educate Texas.

Educate Texas is an important organization within the Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) and as such, this new executive will forge strong, collaborative relationships with CFT and its Board of Directors. The ED will assess the organizational structure within Educate Texas and look for ways to increase collaboration and innovation. This new executive will work to integrate its teams and organize its external engagement for the most efficient and streamlined impact.

  • Senior Director, Policy & Advocacy
  • Vice President, Finance
  • HR Business Partner
Key responsibilities
  • Partner with the Educate Texas Committee and the Educate Texas executive team to design, enhance, execute, and monitor a strategic plan for Educate Texas.
  • Empower and inspire the Educate Texas team to lead their functions effectively and efficiently and encourage collaboration across Educate Texas and CFT.
  • Direct the work of the Educate Texas Executive Team and leadership, ensuring appropriate resources are available for program objectives.
  • Develop and lead Educate Texas initiatives around organizational strategy and culture.
  • Lead development and fundraising efforts in close coordination with the Managing Director and development team.
  • Lead Educate Texas strategies with regard to Advocacy.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with state education leaders, school officials, stakeholders, corporation and foundation partners, and policy makers.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to partners and act as the public face of the organization, including primary interactions with the media and legislature.
  • Maintain communications and strong working relationships with the Educate Texas Committee, CFT Executives, CFT Executive Leadership Team, professional staff, donors, and the CFT Board.
  • Develop, manage, and guide strategy and resources for the organization.
  • Actively promote the organization in the community.
  • Manage the organizational budget.
  • Actively identify, cultivate, and maintain funder relationships.
Qualifications / Skills / Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required or equivalent experience, relevant advanced degree preferred.
  • 10 or more years of management experience with a record of progressive increases in responsibility, including significant budget/financial experience.
  • Familiarity with foundations, national funders, and grant making best practices and regulations.
  • Knowledge of secondary education and its infrastructures in Texas required.
  • Experience in outreach/community organization, including statewide experience, preferred.
  • Familiarity with media and public policy in Texas preferred.
  • Spanish language skills and knowledge of/experience in urban underserved areas preferred.
  • Committed individual who believes in and can communicate Educate Texas's mission and its partners' visions.
  • Innovative and entrepreneurial self-starter who works well without direct supervision.
  • Executive with a firm understanding of business/financial principles who is capable of advising and recommending wise investment of the projects' funds.
  • Team player capable of working with partners and participants.
  • Excellent communicator capable of presenting Educate Texas effectively to partners, participants, and the public.
  • Leader who can represent Educate Texas across Texas and build public support for its long-term sustainability.
  • An effective leader, who can balance the leadership of Educate Texas while also fully embracing the role as a CFT leader.
  • Individual with a resilient, flexible, collaborative, and facilitative approach to team building, problem-solving, and program development.
