Our Strategic Direction
Job Goal:
To provide exemplary educational leadership for the overall direction of the Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 Special Education Program. The Director of Special Education serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team helping establish productive relationships and a collaborative school district culture with the entire school community. The role requires leadership, management, supervision, evaluation, coordination, and direction of all special education programs and services for students with disabilities in District 123. Responsibilities include strategic professional development, creating and managing budgets and grants, monitoring compliance to meet state and federal mandates, and supporting equitable and inclusive evidence-based practices and programming for academic growth and achievement, social-emotional learning, and behavior management within a multi-tiered system of support framework.
Qualifications:
- Illinois State Board of Education Professional Educator License with General Admin. Endorsement
- Director of Special Education Endorsement
- The employee shall possess the minimum of a Master's Degree
- LBS1 Endorsement preferred
- Prior teaching, administrative, and educational leadership experience at the K-12 level.
Superintendent
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Personnel
- Recruit, recommend for hire, assign and evaluate Special Education employees, in conjunction with building administrators, in accordance with board policy and administrative procedures.
- Assist in interviewing prospective personnel in collaboration with building administration, assure appropriate certification and make recommendations for employment when appropriate.
- Develop staffing projections each spring based on current and projected student enrollment
- Assist building administration with Special Education programming and scheduling decisions
- Curriculum/Instruction/MTSS
- Provide leadership and coordination for instructional, related services, and paraprofessional support in all Special Education learning settings.
- Improve teaching and learning by providing leadership in professional development, curriculum development and assessment, family involvement and program management.
- Plan and direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of the preschool and K-8 curriculum.
- Organize and direct committees in the research, writing, editing, and articulating of the curriculum relative to special education students.
- Direct and monitor the selection of instructional materials for the Special Education Program.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction to schedule appropriate professional development.
- Collaborate with staff to implement a consistent framework for effective teaching and learning that includes standards-based instruction, research-based instructional practices and high expectations for student growth.
- Ensure the provision of technical assistance with staff regarding instructional strategies for special education students.
- Program Development
- Support a continuous improvement cycle that uses multiple forms of data and student work samples to enhance individual, team and school-wide improvement goals, identify areas for improvement, measure outcomes and celebrate successes.
- Plan and direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Special Education Program.
- Coordinate and participate in the problem-solving process for students enrolled in Special Education programs district-wide to ensure appropriate intervention, support and progress monitoring is implemented for students who demonstrate needs.
- Review the recommendations for changes in instructional programming and submit those that are high priority needs to the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
- Provide training, technical support for and coordination of professional development of best practices opportunities for teaching staff, paraprofessionals and related staff who work directly with children in Special Education programs.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction to schedule appropriate professional development related to a new or revised program change.
- Serve as the LEA representative in evaluation and IEP proceedings when necessary.
- Ensure a smooth transition for children and families who have been referred to the LEA to determine eligibility for special education and related services compliant to mandated timelines and federal and state regulations.
- Communicate recommendations/decisions to all stakeholder groups.
- Compliance/Grant Reporting
- Interpret (or seek interpretation) and ensure that all local, state, and federal rules and regulations that govern special education students are followed and implemented. Identify and report to the Superintendent any inconsistencies between District policies and practices and state and federal rules and regulations.
- Ensure correct interpretation and implementation of state and federal regulations pertaining to instruction, grant writing and service delivery for special education students.
- Ensure the delivery of all necessary services to special education students.
- Record pertinent information and complete all Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) mandated forms and grants or direct a designee to complete these tasks.
- Compile and issue annual procedures with the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction regarding mandated State assessment as they pertain to special education students.
- Collaborate with ISBE to ensure compliance with state laws, rules, and regulations.
- Resource Management
- Collaborate with district and school staff to allocate staffing, materials and professional development effectively.
- Determine and monitor budgets associated with the Special Education Program. Supervise and monitor other business operations listed below.
- Develop and monitor the timely use of grants for the Special Education Program.
- Ensure that purchase orders align with the curriculum.
- Compile and communicate student data.
- Direct the collection, analysis, and maintenance of temporary and permanent records for special education students.
- School/Community Relations
- Engage students, staff, families and communities proactively in supporting student learning and the school district's mission and vision.
- Communicate, collaborate, and present to the Board of Education, school staff, parents, and community agencies.
- Resolve issues in regard to the Special Education Program.
- Plan, organize, and facilitate family engagement and educational activities
- Respond to inquiries from staff, families, and students within a 24-hour time frame.
- Plan and direct the Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC) and other family/community partnerships.
- General
- Participate in meetings and perform other responsibilities as assigned by the superintendent or designee in accordance with the contract and Board of Education.
- Possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with a wide range of constituencies and is comfortable in remaining highly visible to all stakeholders.
- Understands effective teaching and learning best practices for all students and can influence staff to effectively implement sound instructional practices.
- Ability to sit/stand for prolonged periods of time/Regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.
- Other duties as directed by the superintendent.
$130,000 and an excellent benefit package in a 12-month, 260-Day administrative contract commencing July 1, June 30, 2026
