The Manager, Electronic Controls Engineering provides technical support for process planning, control and improvements. Involves the different phases of Manufacturing engineering projects from concept through on-going production. Participates in such specific activities as design and evaluation of processes, tooling, product costing, and preparation of specifications for bids and proposals.
This position will serve our Air Division, located in Fort Smith, AR
Responsibilities
- Determine the most efficient workstation layout, machines, tools and operations required to develop optimum line balance for sequential operations. Recommend and develop process flow layouts. Devises and develops the use of substitute equipment, tools and operations to overcome production schedule or technical problems.
- Plan and design complex production dies, jigs, fixtures, gauges and cutting tools. . Develop improvements of special hydraulic, pneumatic and electromechanical equipment. After design, monitors and controls fabrication progress, establishes estimates of time, material and labor costs on projects submitted. Examples of complex projects are those involving progressive dies, fin die design and construction, complex control schemes on fin presses that control multiple progression fin dies with gaggable subdies for variable notches within the fin, machine tool specifications, welding/fabricating cells and acquisition of process developments new and unique to HTPG. Project management methods and reports are used to monitor the projects.
- Participate in productivity and quality improvements by investigation, analyzing and estimating cost reduction in proposed major changes involving department layouts, methods and operation sequence, machine utilization, tools, jigs, fixtures and the introduction of automation.
- Investigate availability of special machines, restrictions of work place layout and available facilities prior to estimation material, labor and machine costs. Obtains necessary data from various sources such as research and development engineering, quality control, and material costs required to support specific items of equipment or production schedules. Reviews and directs the integration of this information as facets of cost into bid proposals.
- Investigate new process technologies. Determines adaptability to HTPG facilities and product designs. Prepares specifications, appropriations, and initiates purchases of capital equipment and oversees their installation and implementation.
- Develop capability requirements and acceptance criteria for new and existing manufacturing processes.
- Analyze all manufacturing and procedural proposals to determine the most feasible methods, the probable capital or expense expenditure requirements and the estimated total cost. Prepare and present both oral and written reports to management along with detailed justification of recommendations.
- Investigate and provide solutions for process issues to reduce defects, scrap or re-work to improve the quality of the product and productivity of the plant.
- Determine ways to reduce work-in-process, finished good inventories, raw materials or non-value added activities to aid in controlling operating cost of the facility.
- Plan, devise and document engineering information such as operation sequences, materials, machines, equipment, tooling and processes required to manufacture, fabricate, assemble or process electrical, mechanical, sheet metal or non-ferrous components, assemblies and systems of minimum material, labor and machine costs.
- Develop and compile specifications or operating parameters for production materials and/or processes.
- Consult with and advise other functional areas of the plant in the solution of material and processing problems and in the interpretation and application of processing procedures.
- Contact vendors and manufacturers in the development and investigation of new materials or processes and in determining the application of new or substitute materials.
- Review and analyze product drawings, technical data, product samples and other available information on assigned projects for cost and manufacturability.
- Review and analyze drawing and specifications to estimate cost of purchased or manufactured components and assemblies.
- Process planning, including inter and intra departmental material handling methods and storage.
- Serve on Product Development Teams in leadership or contributory roles advising designs for manufacturing and assembly concepts for new and redesigns of product. He/she is responsible with the team for schedules, project effectiveness, timely management reporting and cost control.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Understands basic management approaches such as work scheduling, prioritizing, coaching and process execution.
- Typically requires advanced knowledge of job area typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience.
- Typically requires a University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 7 years of prior relevant experience.
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficient computer skills and in-depth knowledge of relevant software such as MS Office Suite.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with others is a matrix team environment.
- Able to interact and communicate effectively at the engineering technical level with people in and outside the company.
- Must possess effective verbal and written skills to communicate technical analysis of problems and reports.
- Fluent in PC software applications such as spreadsheets, word processors, presentation and project management a must.
- Must have excellent communication skills to deal effectively with other functional areas of the company.
- Independent thought, good judgment, problem solving skills and ability to prioritize multiple projects a must.
- AutoCAD or similar computer aided drafting.
- Knowledgeable in tooling, pneumatic, hydraulic and mechanical systems.
- Basic understanding of programmable logic controllers and industrial electrical control systems.
- Significant Project management experience, excellent organizational skills and a proven record of successfully leading and directing projects and process improvements a must.
- Possess and apply comprehensive knowledge of manufacturing/mechanical engineering principles to complete significant assignments. Ability to apply SPC techniques for evaluating and making improvements.
- Ability to travel without restrictions.
- Working knowledge of Pro-E, Concepts of Lean Manufacturing, and Design for Manufacturing a plus.
- Ideal candidate possesses experience with fin die design and construction, possesses an understanding of complex control schemes on fin presses that control multiple progression fin dies with gaggable subdies for variable notches within the fin.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, or technical procedures. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
