The Opportunity
The Raw Material Lead is responsible to create and execute the raw materials strategy within the MEC Label organization. Working closely with Director of MEC Label Product creation team, this role will ensure the raw materials calendar is adhered to and material development aligns with the material roadmap. From developing seasonally appropriate materials with the product creation team, to ensuring fabrics pass our rigorous testing criteria. You will work cross functionally to execute the raw material strategy to support the growth of the MEC Label brand. Partner with raw material mills to develop future materials and hold them accountable on pricing, quality, testing and delivery.
Location: This is an 5 days a week in office role based at MEC's Head Office in Vancouver.
As the Raw Materials Lead you'll be;
- Work within the innovation and product creation team to create commercially viable, functional materials and trims that align with the Raw Materials sourcing strategy and meet MEC's end use requirements, quality and sustainability goals.
- Create material roadmap by classifications which keeps MEC Label in touch with leading material innovations, new technologies and sustainability.
- Partner with product creation to create material and trim briefs that include specified objectives and requirements.
- Lead the creation of a core MEC Label approved material library, known as the Toolbox.
- Manage the creation of Material Specs based on MEC quality standards and performance expectations.
- Oversee raw materials performance and test criteria used to measure and validate functional performance, quality and cost criteria as part of the design and development of MEC Label Product..
- Ensure development headers/swatches are requested, received, reviewed, and commented on in a timely manner.
- Maintain material specifications accuracy in PLM and ensure accurate data regarding each material and its supply chain from fiber to fabric
- Build and nurture long-term relationships with suppliers built on trust and integrity.
- Lead the seasonal commercialization timelines to successfully meet product deadline expectations.
- Manage the extraction of seasonal RM greige data from PLM to provide mills with seasonal fabric forecasts.
- Set up and run monthly meeting to report fabric and trim liability to the MEC Label business.
- Communicate closely with cross functional teams in design, sourcing, quality engineering and production to ensure goals are aligned. Identify and resolve potential quality risks in development, mitigating risks and delays for commercialization of the MEC product.
- Responsible for creating material hand standards to distribute to factories and production team. File and maintain reference library in office.
- Collaborate with the costing team, PLM (Product Line Manager) and Design team to ensure materials are delivered at the target cost through the consideration of volume, lifecycle, sustainability attributes, performance features and mill/factory regionality.
- Initiate supplier reporting, track and report commercialization risks to leadership via dashboard and/or weekly meeting.
- Degree in Material Science or Material Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent relevant apparel industry experience
- 5 years' experience in apparel business.
- Strong interpersonal skills and can work effectively with internal and external stakeholder of diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Good commercial sense, analysis skill, passionate about raw materials.
- Experience in problem solving and multi-tasking with impeccable integrity.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in a fast-paced fluid environment
- Proficient in Excel. Experience with Centric PLM system would be a bonus.
- Fluent in English and have strong verbal and written communication skills.
This is a permanent role with the anticipated salary range of $75,500 to $94,900. The exact salary will be dependent on the successful candidate's relevant skills, experience, qualifications and internal equity. This role is eligible for our annual variable incentive plan.
