Summary

The Director of the Counseling Center is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Counseling Center programs and services, is responsible for the supervision and management of the multidisciplinary staff members within the Center, is the Counseling Center budget administrator, provides counseling and psychological services to university students, and provides clinical supervision to trainees and unlicensed clinical staff. The person in this position is responsible for the Center's adherence to and compliance with applicable standards of practice related to counseling and psychological services (including accreditation standards, state and federal law, and professional codes of ethics). The Director of the Counseling Center forms collaborative relationships with other departments and organizations both on and off campus to facilitate the provision of high quality and widely accessible counseling services to the diverse student body at BGSU. The Director leads the Counseling Center team to establish strategic initiatives designed to address the mental health of the entire student body. The Director also consults with and advises other areas of campus about matters pertaining to the mental and emotional well-being of the student body.

Essential Functions
  • Direct Counseling and Psychological Services for Students
    • Lead the provision of counseling and psychological services to BGSU students.
    • Continuously assess the need for services and ensure compliance with accreditation standards, laws, and ethics.
    • Allocate personnel resources appropriately and maintain procedures for service delivery.
    • Oversee timely assignment of students to therapists, manage requests for therapist changes, and ensure all service requests are addressed.
    • Implement processes for collaborative care with Falcon Health Center, internal offices, and external vendors.
    • Ensure adequate systems support clinicians in their work.
  • Ensure Integrity of Counseling Services
    • Provide clinical consultations for high-risk students and ensure all practices align with legal, ethical, and accreditation requirements.
    • Offer training on confidentiality and security, and interpret Center procedures and University policies.
    • Maintain consultative relationships with on- and off-campus partners.
    • Conduct accreditation self-studies, respond to accreditation feedback, and stay informed on counseling center practices.
  • Conduct Program Assessment and Evaluation
    • Develop annual goals and objectives for the Counseling Center.
    • Establish learning objectives for Center programs and implement processes to measure goal achievement.
    • Report on progress and revise programs in response to assessments.
    • Oversee quality assurance procedures and collaborate on student satisfaction surveys with campus partners.
  • Deliver Counseling and Psychological Services
    • Provide individual, group, and couples therapy, as well as consultation and assessment services.
    • Respond to emergencies and offer after-hours consultation.
    • Oversee the BGSU Crisis Response Team and collaborate on campus crisis response efforts.
  • Supervise Professional Staff
    • Provide direct administrative supervision to professional staff members, offering leadership in decision-making and consultations.
    • Assist staff in setting professional and productivity goals, incorporating feedback from quality assurance reviews.
    • Conduct regular formal and informal performance evaluations and ensure adherence to Center and University policies.
    • Oversee the supervision of trainees provided by professional staff.
  • Represent the Counseling Center
    • Act as a consultant to the University Behavioral Intervention Team and Threat Assessment Team.
    • Serve as a member of the Division of Community Well-Being leadership team and represent the Center to the media when required.
    • Collaborate with external partners like the Unison Mobile Crisis Unit to provide crisis services.
    • Coordinate with academic units for training graduate students and meet with consultants and accreditation visitors.
    • Engage with prospective donors and represent the Counseling Center at events.
  • Administer the Counseling Center Budget
    • Determine budget priorities and appropriate expenditures of Center funds.
    • Keep leadership informed of the Center's financial needs and explore revenue generation opportunities to supplement University funding.
  • Provide Supervision and Training
    • Work with Assistant Directors to provide clinical supervision for unlicensed staff when needed, including weekly supervision sessions and review of documentation and recorded sessions.
    • Conduct training seminars on psychological issues and ensure the integration of clinical and training activities.
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

The following Degree is required:
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical, or Educational Psychology required. Degree must be conferred at the time of application.
The following Degree is preferred:
  • Doctorate Degree in Counseling, Clinical, or Educational Psychology preferred.
The following Experience is required:
  • 5 years of experience providing direct clinical services as a licensed behavioral health provider
  • 3 years of experience supervising a multidisciplinary team of administrative and mental health professionals
The following Experience is preferred:
  • 2 years serving as an assistant or associate director (or equivalent) of a college or university counseling center
The following Licensure, Certifications, or Registration is required:
  • Must meet all qualifications for independent licensure in the state of Ohio and must be able to obtain licensure in Ohio within 6 months of hire.
