As part of the Transportation Group, the Transportation Engineer manages a variety of projects - roadway, municipal, port, or rail design projects and develop plans for projects across the state, US and potentially internationally. Familiar with a variety of civil engineering type projects, has permitting experience and a strong existing professional network with municipal, state DOT or regulatory agency staff is desired.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Leads engineering design tasks for roadway, municipal, rail and port projects from preliminary to final design
  • Develops specifications, cost estimates, and prepare final bid packages
  • Maintains and establishes working relationships with regulatory agencies, local government, VDOT and state clients, as well as private clients
  • Provides project management and engineering design services for traditional design and design-build highway, roadway and other transportation projects
  • Mentor and assist junior engineers in developing final design plans, including but not limited to implementation and knowledge of cross sections, traffic control, drainage, and signing and pavement markings plans
  • Coordinate design activities and meetings between design staff, subcontractors, and client managers
  • Participate in project decisions regarding technical approaches, cost and scheduling performance
  • Identify schedule and cost variances and develop and implement recommendations for corrective action

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or related engineering degree; required
  • Professional Engineer licensure in Virginia or the ability to obtain via reciprocity within 6 months of hire; required
  • 10+ years' experience in transportation (highway/roadway) engineering design projects; required
  • Proven experience required in:
    • Developing and maintaining transportation clients
    • Program and project management
    • Technical leadership on transportation projects
    • Leading / mentoring transportation teams in statewide, and regional markets.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation)
  • Availability and willingness to travel
