Definition OPEN COMPETITIVE RECRUITMENT Open to all qualified candidates. Candidates who pass each phase of the recruitment process will be notified of the official examination dates. Under general supervision, provides paraprofessional medical care and treatment to animals housed at the Animal Shelter; and do related work as required. Essential Functions Conducts physical examinations for signs of injury, illness, or abnormality; segregates and isolates animals as necessary to prevent the spread of disease and infection; administers medications and immunizations orally and by intramuscular, intravenous, and subcutaneous injections, as prescribed by a Veterinarian; performs euthanasia by injection; takes and records temperature, pulse, and respiration; collects and labels specimens of blood, urine, sputum, feces, brain tissue, and various kinds of smears for culture or microscopic examination; administers whole blood or plasma to animals; assists Veterinarian during surgery or treatment; renders emergency treatment to animals and determines need to send animal to a treatment facility; monitors animals for continued health; maintains inventory of all pharmaceutical equipment and supplies; maintains records of all animal treatment or disease investigations; assists in the maintenance of animal health care programs within the Shelter; establishes procedures for the proper housing and feeding of animals and the cleaning of the kennels; assists departmental personnel in the investigation and retrieval of animals in the field by anesthetizing or euthanizing animals when necessary; scans for and inserts microchips and other special identification media; prepares written reports; maintains efficient records system; assists the department in training programs by giving instruction in basic animal health matters; maintains effective relations with fellow employees, outside agencies, and the public; drives on City business. Minimum Qualifications Employment Standards: Knowledge of symptoms of common animal diseases; medications commonly associated with veterinary care and their proper use and dosage; proper methods of safely handling and restraining a wide variety of animals; various breeds and species of animals; animal nutritional needs; proper usage of common veterinary equipment; animal behavior and anatomy; animal physical examinations. Ability to detect symptoms of injury, illness, or abnormality in animals; write reports and maintain efficient records; work well and communicate effectively with fellow employees, outside agencies, volunteers, and the public; originate and execute projects with little or no supervision; effectively express ideas orally and in writing; appropriately interpret instructions in written, oral, graphic, or schedule form; work with and restrain animals of all sizes; stoop, bend, carry, and run; lift up to 50pounds. EDUCATION/TRAINING: Two years experience as a Veterinarian Assistant or Technician. License & Certificates: A valid California Class “C” driver’s license or equivalent at time of appointment; a valid Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or Animal Health Technician (AHT)Certificate issued by the California State Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine is required at time of application.
