The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation. The Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters provides legal guidance to the Police Department, and is responsible for advising all members of the Department on all legal matters affecting the Department; including major criminal and civil litigation and important legislative and judicial developments. The office monitors and facilitates the relationship between the Department and the rest of the criminal justice system; and assists members of the service in interpreting and enforcing state, federal, and local laws; ensures that the policies and practices of the department are lawful and are fairly applied; and develops legislation in accordance with the needs of the Department and public safety concerns. The Agency Attorney will work directly under the supervision of a Managing Attorney in the Legal Bureau. While day-to-day duties will vary based on assignment, the Agency Attorney will represent the Department in a variety of legal matters. Typical tasks and responsibilities include: -Representing the Department in Article 78 proceeding regarding Freedom of Information Law requests- Making court and hearing appearances before administrative bodies on a variety of employment law matters- Searching, retrieving, reviewing, redacting and disseminating documents and videos in response to various legal requests from the public and from government agencies- Assisting the Law Department in the defense of police action and labor and employment litigationWORK LOCATION: Pearl Street. New York. NY .HOURS/SHIFT: Business hooursAGENCY ATTORNEY - Minimum Qualifications1. Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below. 2. One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or 3. Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne . Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment. In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements: To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.Preferred Skills- Admission to the NYS Bar and one year of legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar- Strong communication skills both oral and written, as well as excellent analytical and interpersonal skills - Ability to multitask and handle a complex portfolio of legal issues - Organized, detail-oriented, able to meet deadlines for time-sensitive projectsPublic Service Loan ForgivenessAs a prospective employee of the City of New York, you may be eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance programs.
