Works cooperatively with the principal and teacher in providing a classroom environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional programs and available resource materials. Essential Duties: (These duties represent a sample and may vary by position.) Assists in the instruction of individual students or groups of students in all curricular areas as directed by the teacher. Plans and works with teachers in devising special strategies for reinforcing skills and concepts based on the understanding of individual students-their needs, interests, and abilities. Operates and cares for equipment and materials for instructional purposes within their assigned classroom(s). Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment. Interacts positively with students, parents, and colleagues and facilitates positive interactions among students. Collaborates and shares ideas and strategies with other team members. Alerts the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student. Participates in in-service training programs for professional growth. Assists with school routines and transitions. Assists in checking materials, supervising and assessing students as directed by the teacher. Assists with student attendance procedures, record keeping, collecting money, ordering materials, and other tasks as assigned. Performs related duties as assigned. Education and Experience: Minimum: Completion of an Associate's Degree or two years of higher education equivalent to 48 credit hours, or ability to pass a formal assessment (Workkey and 96 hours of in-service training), or completion of the NC DOL Apprenticeship Program, or completion of the NC ATA Professional Development. Desirable: Associate's Degree with a concentration in Education. More than two years of classroom experience. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: Knowledge of specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the position. Ability to read a variety to manuals, write documents to present information to parents. Ability to understand complex, multi-stepped written and oral instructions. Ability to be flexible. Ability to work independently, under general supervision. Ability to work harmoniously with staff, volunteers, parents and students. Ability to provide a broad range of instructional assistance to teachers and others. Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines. Ability to work with constant interruptions. Ability to operate and maneuver standard office equipment and specialized classroom equipment. Ability to work with student data. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Skill in problem solving to identify issues and create action plans.
