We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner Manager in the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Intensive Care Unit who will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team and is responsible for providing comprehensive care to critically ill children. The role of the Nurse Practitioner Manager includes administrative as well as clinical responsibilities. In addition to the duties of the Senior Nurse Practitioner, the Lead Practitioner provides operational leadership that includes managing and mentoring staff, developing policies and procedures, and quality assurance. Included in the responsibilities is the supervision of exempt-level staff with the authority to hire, discipline, and terminate staff when appropriate. The Practitioner practices within the guidelines of the Institution and by the guidelines outlined in the Maryland Nurse Practice Act. The Practitioner is granted affiliate staff privileges by the Johns Hopkins Medical Board. The Nurse Practitioner Manager will report directly to the Medical Director of the PICU and Nurse Practitioners will report to the Nurse Practitioner Manager.Specific Duties & Responsibilities Analyzes research findings and current trends in area of specialty and applies, as appropriate, to improve the management of patient care. Participates in the research process. Provides detailed and comprehensive documentation of all patient evaluations and services as part of the hospital medical record. Ability to develop expertise and expand knowledge in specific clinical areas and share that knowledge and expertise with colleagues as a team member caring for patients. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in order to provide information to patients and health care personnel including participation in rounds and consultations. Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and problem-solving. Ability to work in collaboration with the attending physician, fellows and residents Analytical ability necessary to diagnose patient medical concerns and to develop and implement plans of action for management. Uses advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge to identify acute and/or chronic health problems through a comprehensive assessment of patients/families. Ability to incorporate into practice theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary health care team members. Ability to function effectively in a fluid, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.
Authority and Decision Making
Candidate will be prescribing medications including oral, parenteral, intramuscular, or subcutaneous drugs; also prescribes Schedule 2, 2n, 3, 3n, 4, 5 Drugs under the guidelines of the Maryland Nurse Practice Act and the DEA. All activities pertaining to patient care will be reviewed daily with the attending physician in the PICU. Authority for coordinating and making decisions regarding patient care. Coordinates scheduling, orders appropriate tests, evaluates results, records data, performs patient evaluations and participates in care of patients on specific protocols regarding specific disease entities and treatment. Prioritizing and organizing work to meet the changing priorities of the functional unitSupervisory Responsibility
Provides guidance and direction to other unit staff where applicable. Assists with the coordination of clinical experiences for Advanced Practice Nursing candidates including acting as preceptor/mentor for Advanced Practice Nursing candidates in collaboration with the respective University professors. Meets at least monthly with Physician Director for updates and planning. Meets with Nurse Manager at least quarterly for updates and planning. Meets with the Nurse Pracitioners at least bi-annually to provide documentation for evaluations and productivity. Coordinates meetings with Nurse Practitioners to share information as needed at least bi-monthly. Maintains data regarding Practitioner productivity in regards to non-clinical time. Distributes work and ensures equitable distribution of workload. Maintains files and data regarding hours worked and holidays/vacations. Oversees monthly schedule and ensures that scheduling guidelines are maintained and adhered to. Further assures that these guidelines are relevant, equitable and dynamic reflecting the needs of the unit as a whole. Facilitates participation in educational activities. Facilitates and encourages attendance and participation in hospital wide and unit based committees and meetings. Facilitates the successful orientation of newly hired Nurse Practitioners to the clinical setting Coordinates the evaluation of Nurse Practitioner performance in collaboration with the Physician Director. Facilitates the hiring/termination/remediation/transfer of Nurse Practitioners. Assures policies and procedures for Nurse Practitioners are updated and centrally located. Monitors and assures compliance of Nurse Practitioners in regards to the institutional requirements and State Board of Nursing.Working Conditions
Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous material, aggressive patients, pharmacological agents, with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.Work requires standing and/or walking for extended periods of time. Work requires positioning, assisting, and/or providing emergency restraining of aggressive patients and patients experiencing loss of control; and transporting patients and/or equipment from one location to another with little likelihood for injury if proper body mechanics and procedures are followed. Minimum Qualifications
Current Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Maryland. Current certification as a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the state of Maryland. Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification. Three years related experience. Maintain certifications by attending appropriate continuing education classes or enrolling in formal credit classes as required by state and national accrediting institutions Masters degree from an accredited school of nursing. Completion of an accredited NP program in the area of Pediatrics.
Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins Universitys salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
