SHIP Culinary and Garden Educator

Job SummaryThe Culinary and Garden Educator combines expertise in gardening, nutrition and the culinary arts to educate students, staff, families, and community members in healthy eating (from farm to fork). The Culinary and Garden Educator will work with SHIP across the schools and the community to teach gardening clubs, cooking classes, provide cooking demonstrations, develop nutrition and garden education programming, oversee the WJCC school garden network and provide special events in collaboration with SHIP staff and volunteers.Duties and ResponsibilitiesProvides culinary demonstrations, culinary skills training, and nutrition education for students, families, and staff at school-based and community eventsDevelops and teaches cooking classes for WJCC students, parents/guardians, and staffDevelops nutrition and garden education materials including articles, videos, and social media postsOversees the WJCC school garden network providing school and community garden support and resourcesProvides support, resources and oversight for gardening and cooking Challenge Clubs as well as take-home club kitsCollaborates with SHIP staff and SHIP volunteers to develop and implement school-wide events (e.g., school-based Farmers Markets, contests, theme-days)Collaborates with the SHIP/CNS Partnership to:Provide culinary expertise to CNS management and staff through advising, assisting, training, and demonstrationSupports school-wide Farm to School taste tests and samplingsProvides strategic outreach, training, and education to community organizations, faith-based institutions, and businesses to build strong collaborations and partnerships focused on gardening and healthy eatingWorks with SHIP staff to identify, train and support community volunteers and guest ChefsAssists in gathering data for various reports and program evaluationAssists in grant-writing and takes the lead in garden and cooking focused small grants.Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)College degree with coursework or experience in gardening / agriculture, nutrition, culinary arts, health promotion or related fields.Experience working with children and teaching gardening and cooking.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Knowledge of industry standards regarding sanitation, management, and nutrition.Knowledge of and ability to use personal computer applications to include email, spreadsheets, graphics, and word processing.Experience creating video lessons for gardening and cooking including lesson development, filming, and editing.Grant writing experience.Valid driver’s license.Must be flexible and willing to travel between schools and division administrative offices.Evening and weekend work required.Must be able to stand for long periods of time.Must be able to lift 50 pounds.The ideal candidate is organized, high energy, and has the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.The ideal candidate has knowledge of the National School Lunch Program and USDA standards.Preferred: ServSafe certification, culinary experience, teaching experience, bilingual.Supervision ExercisedNone.Supervision ReceivedPerforms duties under the supervision of the SHIP Supervisor.Working Conditions and Physical RequirementsWork independently. Highly diverse responsibilities, frequent interruptions, and deadlines. Bending, stooping, and handling equipment weighing up to 40 pounds is occasionally required.
