We follow this philosophy in all our academic programs in service to the wide range of people we serve from preschool to masters.Job Summary: Tutors are essential to the success of the AVID Elective class (1:7 tutor to student ratio), where they facilitate students access to rigorous curriculum. As students from colleges and universities, tutors receive formal training and also serve as role models. AVID students who continue their education in college often return to AVID sites as tutors however this is not required to earn the position. Candidates must have worthy college experience and proficient skill sets in English and Mathematics.Working Hours: Mondays and Wednesdays: 08:00AM - 11:30AM & Tuesdays and Thursdays: 09:45AM - 12:45PM / 12:00PM - 03:00PM Essential Duties include, but are not limited to:Understand and ensure adherence to the 10-Step AVID Tutorial process and tutor students in small groups as directed by the AVID teacher Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students Determine from student notes and discussions the concepts that students are struggling with and should therefore be further explained and assist in teaching study skills and other aspects of college preparation Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and text notes, book notes and other AVID based assignments Assist the AVID coordinator as requested, contacting teachers regarding course outlines and assignment schedules, helping with field trips, contacting parents, developing and preparing AVID instructional materials for tutorials, etc. Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern. Attend and participate required trainings and meetings Underscore the principle of collaborative learning and the practice of students teaching other students through discussion of class and text notes Allow students to shoulder the responsibility for their own active learning while guiding them with strategies that they will become accustomed to using independently Reinforce the idea that learning extends far beyond mere studying to form the basis for long term accomplishments Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for all AVID students to follow and serve as a motivated, organized and successful college student role model for studentsQualifications:Currently enrolled in or completed a degree or graduate program at an accredited college or university Must have a strong math and English language arts background Proof of current college enrollment status and minimum 2.5 GPA at an accredited college or university is required and will be requested at the start of each semesterWorking Environment/Physical DemandsStanding and walking for extended periods of time. Run on occasion. Reach overhead, above shoulders and horizontally, bend at the waist, kneel or crouch. Lift 20 pounds using proper lifting methods.
