The position is in a well-established laboratory investigating the pathophysiology and biology of lung disease in ferret models. This Research Assistant will assist in projects related to preclinical therapy development of novel therapies for Cystic Fibrosis and other lung diseases, and studies of the underlying biology. Key Areas of Responsibility Research: Execute experimental procedures for the development of animal disease models and preclinical experimental therapies; perform molecular biology experiments to characterize ferret models; set up and operate laboratory equipment. Conduct Experiments: Conduct basic procedures in experimental animals and cell culture systems. ·Assist in gene delivery to ferret airways through survival surgery procedures, record and care of the animals after treatment; ·Collect and process biological samples for transgene expression assays, including blood; DNA, RNA and protein extraction; ·Perform cell culture and flow cytometry, protein immunoassays and Western blotting, qPCR and reporter assays Collect, Analyze Research Data and Prepare Reports: Check progress of research activities, maintain detailed and accurate notes of experimental results. Prepare research data for analysis and assist in research and writing for the publication of manuscripts. Attend weekly lab meetings, giving regular reports. Facilities and Equipment Management: Assist in the maintenance of lab equipment. Supervision/Staffing: Supervision is received from senior research staff. Much of the research conducted is interdisciplinary and collaborations are fostered and coordinated through major research centers, institutes and programs. Many faculty members are internationally renowned for their research. Two faculty members are Howard Hughes Institute Investigators, 12 are members of the Institute of Medicine and two are members of the National Academy of Sciences. Percent of Time: 100% Pay Grade: 3A Type of Position: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.
