Patient Care Coordinator-OI PACU/PRE-OP

Job Summary: The Patient Care Coordinator (PCC) performs under the direct supervision of the Patient Care Manager. The Patient Care Coordinator serves as a role model and a coach to the entire department, including Pre-Admission Testing, Pre-op, and the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. The Patient Care Coordinator is accountable and responsible for daily management and coordination of clinical operations, ensuring safe and efficient patient care, providing leadership and support to staff. This role serves as a clinical resource and facilitates communication across all departments at the Orthopedic Institute coordinating care through collaboration with surgeons, anesthesia, physicians, associate staff, and other health care providers to ensure that patient outcomes are achieved within the projected course of treatment implementing the nursing process. Performs all the duties required of a staff nurse in the department and functions in the role of a staff nurse when needed. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the nursing care of patients undergoing surgical intervention. Demonstrate technical aptitude for dealing with and troubleshooting multiple pieces of equipment to include but not limited to IV pump, SCD pump, cold therapy machine, Doppler, code cart/defibrillator, heart monitor, suction machine, glucose monitor, manual and automatic blood pressure machine, electronic thermometer, medication cabinet, patient bed, call light, telephone, computer, printer, scanner, and fax. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development. Possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age specific needs. Demonstrates the critical-thinking skills to respond in an emergency situation. Alerts the Patient Care Manager of any and all emergent situations. Oversees the monthly staffing schedule, including planning, posting, and modifying staffing schedules based on patient volume and unit needs. Coordinates daily with the Specialty Coordinator of the Operating Room regarding the operative schedule to ensure appropriate staffing is available. Adjusts the assignments of staff daily based on patient acuity and unit needs to facilitate the flow of the surgery schedule and oversees staff in planning, implementing, and evaluating the delivery of patient care according to identified patients’ needs. Communicates with other departments, as necessary, in order to resolve operational problems and make most effective use of resources in delivering quality patient care. Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities including: promoting situational awareness, assisting with audits as needed, and using teachable moments. Implements measures to prevent exposure to infection pathogens and communicable conditions; and to promote a safe and confidential environment for the patient and staff. Demonstrates interpersonal skills and competency in leadership, supervision, and management of staff. Fosters staff engagement by demonstrating active listening, requesting and acknowledging feedback, making equitable decisions, providing rationale when appropriate and supporting departmental and organizational goals. Anticipates the needs of the staff members and proactively offers assistance. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by taking ownership of time management, decreasing waste of both time and supplies, and promoting cost effectiveness. Functions as a mentor and resource to unit staff, provides oversight for students/new employees/preceptorships, identifies levels of organizational conflict and applies tools to effectively resolve concerns, complaints, or conflict with patients, families, physicians, and other interprofessional healthcare team members. Assists with staff meetings including, but not limited, to education regarding safety, infection prevention, financial reviews, and any other topic deemed appropriate. Facilitates lunch breaks for all staff and relief of staff for educational opportunities. Proactively seeks opportunities to enhance knowledge and learning towards expertise. Embraces and practices WE CARE philosophy in all aspects of patient, visitor, co-worker, employee, and nonemployee interactions. Performs other job duties as assigned. Qualifications: Education/Skills Graduate of recognized non-online RN program required. Work Experience: A minimum of two years’ critical or bedside nursing required. Pre-op or PACU nursing care preferred, but not required. Certification/Licensure-DUE UPON HIRE Licensed RN able to practice within the State of MS Additional Certification/Licensure - obtained based on the required timeframe below Basic Life Support Within 30 Days of Employment Required Advanced Cardiac Life Support Within 90 Days of Employment Required Pediatric Advance Life Support Within 180 Days of Employment Preferred Moderate Sedation Within 90 Days of Employment Required Telemetry Nurse Education Within 90 Days of Employment Required Mental Demands: Ability to perform as a team member, cooperate with others, follow directions precisely, demonstrate initiative, critically think, set priorities, and function under stress in a high-volume atmosphere.
