Brief Description of DutiesThe Biology Instructor / Biology Lab Manager provides instructional support, technical leadership, and day-to-day management of biology laboratories in the Division of Sciences and Mathematics within the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). In addition to managing laboratory operations, this position includes teaching responsibilities at the introductory level, helping to ensure continuity between laboratory instruction and lecture content. The individual in this role plays a critical part in supporting both the academic and operational functions of the biology program. This includes teaching a lower-level (-level) biology lecture and lab section each semester, preparing and maintaining instructional laboratory spaces and equipment, ensuring safety and compliance, supervising student assistants, and collaborating with faculty on curriculum delivery and lab readiness. This position serves as a liaison between the Division and university service units, playing an integral role in maintaining efficient, safe, and high-quality laboratory operations. The Biology Instructor / Lab Manager supports the university’s educational, research, and outreach missions by ensuring that laboratory environments are conducive to student learning and faculty teaching. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Teach one lower-level (-level) biology lecture and lab section per semester. Provide leadership and operational support for biology instructional labs, ensuring their readiness for scheduled coursework. Assist in preparing budgets for laboratory equipment, materials, and supplies. Set up laboratory equipment and materials for teaching experiments, based on course syllabi and instructional goals. Maintain, troubleshoot, and coordinate repairs for laboratory equipment and instruments. Train faculty, staff, and students in proper lab procedures and safety practices. Oversee the storage, classification, and cataloging of lab materials, reagents, and teaching aids. Ensure all lab operations are compliant with UDC and local safety and environmental regulations. Supervise student assistants and coordinate work-study assignments as needed. Collaborate with faculty and serve as liaison to Procurement and other administrative offices. Monitor and maintain accurate records of lab usage, inventories, and equipment condition. Minimum Job Requirements Master’s degree in Biology or a closely related field. Prior experience teaching biology at the college level, especially introductory/lower-level courses. At least two years of experience in a laboratory setting, preferably in an academic or teaching environment. Working knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and safety standards. Demonstrated ability to support faculty and students in a lab setting. Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently or as part of a team. Familiarity with digital recordkeeping and inventory systems is a plus. "Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated expertise in microbiology Physical Demands Work involves walking, standing, bending, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Tasks may require handling of chemicals, biological materials, and operation of technical lab equipment. Preferred Qualifications Preference will be given to candidates who have: A minimum of five years of research and teaching experience in post-secondary/higher education setting Demonstrated innovative approach to teaching and a willingness to continuously update teaching and learning strategies with new advancements in technology Mentored students conducting undergraduate or graduate research and presenting their research at national conferences and publishing in peer reviewed journals Knowledge of current national initiatives, changes and emerging trends in STEM education Evidence of having secured research funding from private, Federal or state sources
