Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

ATC Automation is seeking a hands-on and innovative Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the mechanical development of custom automation machinery and tooling systems at our Simi Valley, CA location. Remote opportunities may be considered for highly qualified candidates, with occasional travel required to Simi Valley. Projects range in scale and complexity, from rapid R&D initiatives to fully integrated, high-throughput production equipment.You will work directly with customers to define requirements and collaborate with a multidisciplinary engineering team to deliver robust, high-performance automation solutions. Our automation expertise spans critical industries that shape the way we live and move-Life Science, Transportation, Consumer Products, and General Industry.How You Will Make a Difference Lead the mechanical design of systems, mechanisms, and components for custom automated machinery and tooling Develop and enforce best practices, design standards, and continuous improvement initiatives Integrate off-the-shelf and custom automation components, including robotics, actuators, sensors, and vision systems Deliver projects on schedule and within budget; coordinate progress with Project Managers and cross-functional stakeholders  Generate accurate 3D CAD models and fully detailed 2D drawings for manufacturing and assembly Mentor and train junior engineers, reviewing and approving their work for accuracy and quality Support the build and commissioning of equipment, providing hands-on guidance to production teams Build and test mechanical prototypes to validate concepts prior to full-scale deployment Collaborate with controls and software teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical and electronic subsystems Manage external suppliers to ensure component quality, lead times, and compatibility Work closely with customers to refine requirements, align design intent, and ensure functional success Support onsite equipment deployment, installation, and troubleshooting as neededJob Requirements Proven track record in custom automation and machine design Strong ability to size and specify automation peripherals, including actuators, sensors, and vision systems Expert-level proficiency in SolidWorks (or equivalent CAD software) Mastery of engineering drawings, tolerancing, and GD&T (Y14.5M-2009) Deep knowledge of mechanical components, materials, and fabrication processes (machining, welding, sheet metal) Proficiency with basic controls and automation system concepts Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills Strong written and verbal communication skills 6+ years of hands-on experience designing custom automated equipment Proven ability to specify and troubleshoot pneumatic systems and components Expertise in designing fixtures, jigs, and custom tooling for precision assembly or automation applicationsPreferred Experience BS or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field 10+ years of experience in a mechanical design role within custom automation, machine building, or related industries Familiarity with compliance standards such as CE, NFPA 79, and SEMI S8 Hands-on experience troubleshooting and improving the performance of automated machinery Ability to specify and integrate vision equipment, including cameras, lenses, lighting, filters, and mounting systemsPhysical Requirements:Work in standing/sitting position continuously.Stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor.Physically be underneath machines working overhead.Exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally.Exert 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently.Exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objectsVISUAL ACUITY: Near acuity with or without accommodationHEARING Ability: Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose, with or without accommodationDisclaimer:This job description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification.
