Position Information The Department of Natural Sciences (DNS) at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track assistant professor position from chemists specializing in organic contaminants in the environment. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.DNS houses the biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and environmental science undergraduate programs and graduate programs in chemistry, marine-estuarine and environmental sciences, and toxicology creating an outstanding collaborative environment. We seek candidates who have the capacity to teach to a diverse student population and prepare students broadly for futures in industry, government, and graduate and professional schools.Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate organic chemistry in support of our ACS-certified chemistry program and courses in the candidate’s specific areas of expertise. The successful candidate will create a strong, collaborative research program that complements research across the School of Agriculture and Natural Sciences (SANS) and that strengthens UMES’s status as a High Research Activity leader in issues such as water pollution, phosphorus management, agriculture, forest loss, microplastics, and metabolomics within our diverse ecosystem of the Maryland Eastern Shore. Responsibilities Teach graduate and undergraduate courses.Conduct research in his or her field of expertise.Recruit and mentor graduate students.Publish in scholarly journals.Secure funding from various agencies to support his or her research.Performs other related duties as assigned. Classification 25- Education, Training, and Library Occupations Required Qualifications PhD in chemistry.Experience teaching and/or mentoring undergraduates and implementing research projects Preferred Qualifications PhD in Organic Chemistry with a focus on the lifecycle of organic molecules within the environment.Experience teaching at the university or college level.Demonstrated success or potential for pursuing external funding.Field experience is highly desirable. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Research skills related to the fates and impacts of organic chemicals such as PFAS and other contaminants of emerging concern on organisms and ecosystems.Ability to develop an independent research program in this area.Desire to develop pedagogical skills and teach organic and environmental chemistry. ·Strong writing skills.Ability to motivate and inspire a diverse student body to be successful.
