Tutoring will be offered on-site at Pearl City, HI via scheduled appointment and drop-in availability. Ideal candidates will demonstrate high-level skills in study strategies and basic research methods and be prepared to support undergraduate students across a wide range of courses and disciplines.SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE UMGC PEER TUTOR INCLUDE: Promote a professional, respectful, and safe learning environment Work more closely with English language learnersSPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:Provide support in study skills, organization skills, time management, reading comprehension, and basic research skills as a UMGC student peer tutor to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in UMGC coursesProvide clarification, examples, and tutorials that support the student in improving their study skills, problem-solving strategies, and authentic learningCreate, update, and present guidelines and other resources related to study skills, organization skills, time management, reading comprehension, and basic research skills for studentsRefer students to specific subject tutors for questions about course concepts related to assigned readings, projects, or homework assignmentsRefer students to the library for additional support in research and citationPromote a professional, respectful, and safe learning environmentWork more closely with English language learnersREQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Be a current undergraduate or graduate student at UMGC with a minimum of two consecutive semesters completed not more than a year agoA grade of “A” in any version of PACE (for undergraduate candidates)Able to demonstrate fair knowledge of good study skills, reading comprehension, and basic research skillsFair knowledge in the use of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to create content material (, one-pagers and presentations)Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills in EnglishAbility to clearly communicate step-by-step instructions in verbal and written formatsAbility to work closely with students to ensure student successAbility to work with diverse student populationsPREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Letter of recommendation or referral from a UMGC faculty memberBackground in teaching, tutoring, and/or other type of learning support experience initiatives in a face-to-face environmentWHO WE ARE AND WHO WE SERVEUMGC—one of 11 degree-granting institutions in the University System of Maryland (USM)—is a mission-driven institution with seven core values that guide us in all we do.
