Job summary

The Economic Security and Technology Department is seeking research interns to support our work. We examine issues shaping global technology and commercial competition, focusing on economic policies such as trade, investment, and industrial policy; critical and emerging technologies, such as AI and semiconductors; and economic relations with other global economic actors. The Economic Security and Technology Department brings together nearly a dozen of CSIS programs to provide cross-cutting research on economic and technology policies and their role in U.S. national security. The hired candidate will be paid hourly, commensurate with experience ($17.50/hour for current undergraduate hires, $18.50/hour for hires with a bachelor's degree, and $19.50/hour for hires with a master's degree).

Essential duties and responsibilities

Essential functions and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following
• Conduct data analysis to create visualizations for review using Excel and Flourish on economic security and technology policy topics
• Produce succinct memos and podcast notes for review on industrial policy, global trade and investment, and technological developments in the United States and abroad
• Create engaging visual content using tools like Canva for posts, banners, presentations, and infographics
• Draft social media content and other digital media to promote EST events, reports, and relevant research
• Assist with events, including video clips, summaries, check in, and other related activities.

Knowledge, education, and experience


• Prior research experience, either within a class or a previous internship in the following areas is desirable but not requiredo International economics and U.S. trade and investment policyo Technology policy in the United States and/or abroad
• A basic understanding of data science, Excel, and at least one statistical software for data analysis – such as Python, R, and Stata - is highly beneficial
• Research experience, within a class or internship, on regional economic and technology issues - particularly in North America, Africa, and/or Asia - is a plus
• Must be able to work in-person at the CSIS office with the ability to work from home occasionally if needed
• Must be at least an undergraduate student with a junior standing or above, master's student, or a recent graduate.
• Must have excellent English-language writing and research skills and be detail-oriented under pressure
• Should be critical and creative thinkers who thrive in an independent working environment with tight deadlines. Proactive problem solving, proper time management skills, and the ability to brief staff in an effective and concise manner are essential
• Must be able to function well as part of a friendly, small, and close-knit team. The ability to communicate efficiently and effectively is necessary All candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. Foreign nationals must have employment authorization, as CSIS does not sponsor visas for interns.
