Our team solves tough, meaningful problems that create a safer, more secure world.The Materials and Process Engineering Department, which functions within Mechanical Engineering, is looking for a Materials Engineer to join our team in Andover, MA. This role is to support program hardware design and development and production activities. A qualified candidate will have background and experience in metallurgy and evaluating materials and processes used within product design and/or manufacturing. This position will offer a qualified candidate the opportunity to support material selections during design, development, and manufacturing of hardware, and support failure analysis activities associated with a wide range of product applications. The role will involve evaluation of a variety of materials, with a focus on metals and coatings, and validation and verification that materials and processes used on product meet design and program requirements. Tasks will require critical thinking to solve challenging problems and careful attention to detail on procedures and documentation of results. Collaboration with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, subject matter experts, and suppliers is required. A candidate must be able to manage and coordinate a wide variety of simultaneous tasks within set schedule requirements. What You Will Do:Evaluation of materials and processes based on conformance to specifications and design and performance requirementsWorking closely with design personnel in the selection and approval of materials and finishes in new and updated designsSupporting product production and supplier support activitiesProviding evaluation and resolution to technical, operational, and supplier problems related to materials and processesParticipate in analysis and documentation of technical positions for alternate materials, obsolescence, and failure analysisEnsure labor costs and estimated completion schedules provided by the Materials and Process Engineering Sections are negotiated, understood, and met product/program commitmentsThe Principal Materials Engineer job is in Andover, MA and the position is onsite.Qualifications You Must Have: Typically requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering or Metallurgy and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience. In absence of a degree, 12+ years of experience. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for additional years of experienceExperience in metal alloy systems (i.e. Aluminum, Carbon Steel, Alloy Steel, Corrosion Resistant Steel, High Temperature Materials, and Specialty Alloys)Experience in metal design and developmentQualifications We Prefer:Experience in evaluation of metals for use in productsExperience working on programs, projects, or products associated with the Defense IndustryExperience working with engineering drawingsExperience with metal manufacturing methods including Casting, Forging, Mill Products, Heat Treatment, Furnace Brazing, Additive ManufacturingExperience working with and evaluation of suppliers performing special manufacturing processesExperience with common industry standards for metals and metal manufacturing including Aerospace Materials Specifications, American Welding Society, and ASTM International.Experience with corrosion fundamentals and mitigation techniquesExperience with mechanical and/or chemical analysis methods and characterization techniquesExperience related to Material Review Boards, Material and Process Change Boards, Risk Boards, and Engineering Review BoardsExperience with project milestones such as preliminary design reviews and critical design reviewsEarned Valued certification or experienceAbility to write concise technical reports summarizing analysesDemonstrated ability to lead and complete scientific based projects including failure analysis and obsolescence investigationsProficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)Strong communication, interpersonal, planning and time management skillsABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.Demonstrated ability to work effectively with coworkers from different communities and culturesDemonstrated ability to work with colleagues who represent a variety of background of work and conflict resolution stylesWhat We Offer:Our values drive our actions, behaviors, and performance with a vision for a safer, more connected world. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
