Department of Microbiology in Kurt Dahlstrom’s lab. The individual will contribute to research that is related to the goals of the laboratory’s grants, write scientific manuscripts, respond to peer review, and carry out managerial tasks to help keep the lab running day to day. The lab’s research is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of how a bacterium is used as a ‘toxin sponge’ by a host fungus to resist antimicrobial compounds and antifungal drugs. The individual will need to independently generate and analyze RNA-seq data from a mixed bacterial-fungal culture, annotate fungal genomes, and generate publishable manuscripts using this data. There is also the opportunity to develop novel projects that include using CRISPR-Cas9 technology to knockout fungal genes of interest identified in the RNA-seq experiments. While some training in wet bench methods will be provided, the ability to develop techniques independently will be valued. Finally, an emphasis on understanding the importance of a healthy lab environment is a requirement, and being collegial with lab members is critical. Duties/Responsibilities Duties/Responsibilities This position will work independently to carry out activities integral to the research performed in the Dahlstrom lab. This includes performing tasks such as culturing filamentous fungi and partner bacterium, performing basic genetic techniques on these model organisms, conducting data analysis, communicating research findings at meetings/conferences and writing scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication. Use of DeSeq2, fungal genome annotation software, R, PowerPoint/Keynote, spreadsheets, Prism and other similar software are expected.
