SALARY RANGE: $48,246.00 - $54,490.00 USD Annually

EDUCATION ACCREDITATION:  Applicant's education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.

ELIGIBILITY:  Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK:  Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to this position identified as positions of trust will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a Fingerprint check.

PROBATION:  All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months.
 

CLASS DESCRIPTION

An Animal Enforcement Officer drives an animal transport truck and responds to a variety of service calls related to animals including calls to retrieve animals in severe distress and deceased animals. An Animals Enforcement Officer investigate allegations of animal abuse and neglect, takes steps to remove abused or endangered animals from homes and owners, and transports animals safely to the City's shelter or to emergency care. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities; however, they are paired with and assist other officers and may assist in the training of new officers.

Incumbents receive moderate supervision from an administrative superior. Employees in this class work a rotating shift that includes 24-hour-per-day, seven days-a-week coverage. Work is performed outdoors where the incumbents are exposed to such conditions as inclement weather and dead, diseased, or dangerous animals and may involve hostile situations. Work requires such moderate to heavy physical exertion as bending and lifting and pulling or carrying small to large size domestic animals including wildlife.

SELECTION PROCESS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:

EDUCATION:  Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.

AND
EXPERIENCE:  Have one year of experience in handling animals.

OR

NOTES (EQUIVALENCIES):  Have an equivalent combination of education and experience, or Two years of experience as a law enforcement officer may be substituted for one year of experience in handling animals.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES

A valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required.

NOTE: Previous appointment by the Baltimore City Police Commissioner as a "Special Enforcement Officer" under Baltimore City Code, Article 19 Police Ordinances, Subtitle 71 OR designation by the Agency Head as a Code Enforcement Officer under Baltimore City Code, Article 1, Mayor and City Council and Municipal Agencies, Subtitle 40.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Basic knowledge of animal handling and care. Ability to use email, basic computer skills. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively both in writing and verbally. Ability to follow directions.
 

EXAMINATION PROCESS
