Duties Description The Environmental Educator 2 will be responsible for three main areas: 1) assisting with managing the DEC summer youth program for children 11- to-17-years-old at four camps statewide, 2) supporting Bureau of Environmental Education programs, and 3) supervising staff. ing with Camps Program Staffing and Program Development•Recruiting, interviewing, training, mentoring and evaluating seasonal camp staff •Overseeing and developing annual training for 60+ seasonal staff including determining needs for updates, revisions, and reports •Managing the Camps Youth Volunteer Program including developing place-based curriculum for weeklong citizen science service projects to enhance the camper-volunteer experience and provide underserved campers leadership opportunities •Assisting with monitoring budget needs and spending reports Sponsor Organizations •Managing and strengthening sponsor organization partnerships by working with environmental and community organizations, DEC Offices of Environmental Justice, and Indian Nation Affairs to support bringing awareness of Camps to underserved communities •Providing outreach and education events to organizations wishing to become sponsors Online and Promotion •Coordinating the statewide use of the Camps program online registration and management system which maintains 11,000 active accounts and includes private health information of campers under the age of 18 •Developing and implementing promotional items to support camper and staff recruitment, sponsor involvement, and special events that support the Camps program •Linking campers and parents to DEC’s social media, and managing Camps social media presence •Strengthening camper recruitment efforts through new and existing promotion channels ting Bureau Programs •Working with teacher centers, associations, community centers, and other organizations to raise awareness of DEC’s Camps program through sponsorship, campership diversity, or seasonal staff opportunities •Documenting and promoting bureau programs through multiple communication channels ., Facebook, GovDelivery and e-News •Training and supporting educators in environmental literacy and using the outdoors as a classroom •Providing education programming to community partners and other groups to support bureau needs ising Staff •Supervising and mentoring Environmental Educator 1 staff for camps Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. To be eligible for appointment under NY HELPS, candidates must meet the non-competitive minimum qualifications below:Non-competitive qualifications:Four years of experience in environmental conservation in a professional or technical capacity or professional teaching of environmental education and two years of experience teaching about or interpreting the natural world.* An associate degree in a related field can substitute for two years of environmental conservation experience; a bachelor’s degree in a related field can substitute for four years of environmental conservation experience.Competitive qualificationsReassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DECorReinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.or55-b/55-c -Candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications below and include with their resume or application, a copy of the letter from Civil Service which indicates approval for the 55-b/55-c program.Open competitive minimum qualifications (provided for 55b/c candidates): Four years of experience in environmental conservation in a professional or technical capacity or professional teaching of environmental education and two years of experience teaching about or interpreting the natural world.* An associate degree in a related field can substitute for two years of environmental conservation experience; a bachelor’s degree in a related field can substitute for four years of environmental conservation experience.
