Position Purpose Rides buses and helps driver ensure safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Student Management Assists students on and off the bus according to their individual needs, including lifting and carrying students with disabilities. Supervises students as they board and exit the bus, and cross the street following established safety procedures. Escorts students into the building and delivers to their assigned destination. Instructs students on safe entering, exiting, and riding rules and regulations. Learns and adapts to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs. Manages student behavior and reports student discipline problems in a timely manner to appropriate administrator. Communicates with teachers and parents regarding student behavior while on bus. Routes & Schedules Completes and maintains accurate, updated, and timely records and reports, including route sheet and daily non-notification forms. Safety Operates equipment according to established safety procedures. Makes sure that seat belts, harnesses, or car seats are used correctly and helps students use safety devises when needed. Follows emergency procedures including evacuation of students as needed and assists driver to administer first aid, if necessary. Follows established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and assisting students. Other Becomes familiar with and follows procedures established by Transportation and Special Education departments. Assists driver with keeping bus clean, and assists with routine pre- and post-trip inspections. Other Duties as Assigned Performs all job-related duties as assigned and in accordance with Board rules, policies and regulations. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of safety protocols, including District rules and regulations, and Texas rules of the road. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws special education and individuals with disabilities. Knowledge of District policies, procedures, and regulations. Skill in talking to others to convey information effectively. Skill working with a diverse, urban population. Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment. Ability to manage student behavior. Ability to work well with children with disabilities. Ability to organize and coordinate work. Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work. Travel Requirements Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required. Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards Tools/Equipment Used: Specialized and adaptive equipment used by students. Posture: Frequent standing and sitting; kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting. Motion: Frequent walking and reaching. Lifting: Frequent heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive equipment. Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise and vehicle fumes; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases); works around vehicles and machinery with moving parts; may work irregular or prolonged hours. Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position. Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions. Minimum Required Qualifications Education: Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency preferred. Certification/License: None. Experience: None.
