REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Trainee for UTILITIES MECHANIC (PT-19) - (WWS Operations Division). General Description This Utilities Mechanic - Trainee position is a unique opportunity to gain valuable, paid experience in the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of water/wastewater systems, lift stations and related mechanical equipment. Work involves participating in a variety of tasks in the construction and maintenance of water and wastewater mains, pumping and treatment facilities. The Trainee learns to install water meters, hydrants, lay pipe, repair leaks and operate various types of equipment; and remove, repair and install a variety of equipment, machinery and control systems in water and wastewater treatment plants and lift stations.
Work involves responsibility for assuring the efficient mechanical operation of equipment, machinery, and related apparatus at water and wastewater treatment plants and lift stations. Learns to operate large utility bed truck, flatbed truck, and hauls trailer with equipment or materials as assigned. Completes daily paperwork including work orders. Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures and work is reviewed through observation of performance, frequent conferences and reports.
Through this Trainee Program, an individual who does not meet all minimal requirements for a specific job classification has an opportunity to gain the job experience and/or training necessary to qualify and potentially transition into the job classification. Utilization of this classification should be on a limited basis and for agencies that have documented difficulty finding qualified individuals for vacant positions. The Human Resources Division should be consulted prior to attempting to fill a Trainee position. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements To be eligible for participation individual must be at least 18 years of age and able to comply with all applicable County employment guidelines.Must also be able to fulfill the minimum job requirements of the associated job classification the employee is training for within a maximum of two (2) years from the date of hire.
Special Certifications and Licenses Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License class "E" or higher for duration of appointment. Preferences Vocational Technical school/associate's degree in progress Experience with hand tools DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Duties and responsibilities depend significantly upon the classification the incumbent is in training for. The functions listed below are general in nature for time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
