You can visit the website to learn more about them. Purpose ASUCD The California Aggie is an entirely student-run and independent publication. The Aggie publishes every day online and produces one print edition each week. Without a journalism program at UC Davis, The Aggie is the best hands-on experience for students interested in journalism, reporting and other aspects of newspaper design and production. Assistant editors for The California Aggie are expected to assist editors in all editorial tasks with the exception of attending Editorial Board and associated responsibilities. Assistants will help editors in assigning stories, facilitating desk meetings and reviewing/editing articles. They will also be tasked with organizational work such as filling out spreadsheets for facilitating workflow. They are still expected to write one article per week that will appear in print and/or online. *-*-*-*-*-* NOTE: Employment of nonresident is strictly regulated by Federal Law. Expected Graduation Date (Quarter & Year): How long have you been with The Aggie? Why do you want to work as an assistant editor? Why do you think you’re qualified to be an assistant editor? Assistant positions are a way to help lessen the load off of the desk editor, but another main purpose is to essentially train a replacement to apply for the position next year. Is being a future desk editor one of your goals? What new ideas do you have for the desk on which you currently work? Where do you see any general room for improvement at The Aggie? Skills Assistant editors will be assigned to one of seven desks: campus news, city news, features, arts & culture, sports, science or opinion. Attend weekly desk meetings to pitch story ideas and collaborate with staff writers. Stay up-to-date on topical content for potential story ideas pertaining to the desk. Meet with desk editor one-on-one each week to edit incoming stories for content, grammar and style. Desk editor may have assistants work one-on-one with staff writers to edit for content, grammar and style. Assistants should be well-versed in events that pertain to UC Davis, the UC system or any other realm whose activities may be of interest to The California Aggie's readership, especially as pertaining to their desk. Complete weekly story list and assign photos/graphics for each article. Fill out weekly social media matrix to ensure articles are posted on Aggie social media sites. Attend quarterly Aggie all staff meetings. Attend weekly managing staff story board meetings Craft photo or graphic ideas to pair with weekly story ideas. This role may require work on nights and weekends. Table for The Aggie weekly and assist with morning distribution once per quarter. To avoid bias and maintain standards of journalistic objectivity, staff writers should disclose all real or perceived conflicts of interest during their interview. Staff writers may not be affiliated with the ASUCD government. Must complete UC Managing Implicit Bias Series from University of California Learning Center within two weeks of being hired or have completed the series in the past two years. Completion of UC Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment Prevention Training for Non-Supervisors and the Clery Act Training for Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) within two weeks of being hired or have completed these courses in the past two years.
