Job DescriptionThe NBC News Washington Bureau is seeking an Assignment Desk Editor to collaborate with the Washington, DC News Desk to execute NBC News coverage in DC and the surrounding region across all platforms including Nightly News, The Today Show, NBC News Now and This Assignment Editor should bring a passion for newsgathering and problem solving and be willing to work all aspects and shifts of a Network News Desk operation.Responsibilities:Ensure coverage of breaking news, scheduled events, pooled events, highly produced interviews, field anchoring and other production needs.Monitor and react to breaking news, stay focused in high pressure situations and multitask.Collaborate with Senior Managers of all platforms on planning and execution of coverage.Communicate clearly with talent, producers, field crews, managers of all platforms and counterparts in DC, New York, LA, Miami, Chicago, and London.Work closely with Network & NBC News Now teams to accommodate on-air needs (breaking news, correspondent requests, etc.)Coordinate with technical and operations staff on resource management.Gather and research story ideas, develop sources, gather accurate information from multiple agencies, assign producers and work with NY crew desk to assign crews.Process and analyze a large volume of information, determine what is most important and newsworthy and communicate essential details.Must possess the ability to problem solve, prioritize decisions and act decisively under tight deadlines and pressure.Ability to jump in & quickly assess what is needed on coverage of a breaking story.Collaborate with NBC News digital, streaming and broadcast platforms on newsgathering, social media initiatives and content distribution.Communicate with important groups such as Legal, Standards, R&C to make sure appropriate editorial/usage guidance and is obtained and disseminated to all platforms.Use data to inform and evolve newsgathering, storytelling and audience engagement.Initiate & maintain communication with affiliates & News Channel counterparts.QualificationsBasic Requirements:Bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism, communications or related field or equivalent work experienceAt least 5 years’ experience (with a minimum of 2 years on an assignment desk) at a network or large market television stationMust be willing to work flexible hours, including holidays and weekends.Must be willing to work in Washington Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United StatesMust be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidaysDesired Characteristics:Familiarity with the Washington, DC Pool systemExcellent story development, logistics and follow-up skillsWorking knowledge of the Washington, DC metro areaSelf-starter with excellent communication and organizational skillsMust be able to work effectively with others in a team environment with a keen attention to detailProficiency with the INews computer system and ability to learn NBC NewsconnectDemonstrated ability to multi-task under pressure, meet deadlines, process information, and make decisions quicklyHybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, which currently requires contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week. Beginning January 5, 2026, hybrid employees will be required to work from the office a minimum of four days per week.
