Overview of the FunctionFreshfields is looking for an experienced attorney to join the US Dispute Resolution group as Practice Resource Attorney for US Data, Cyber and Tech Regulatory. The DR group is made up of litigation, investigation, and international arbitration lawyers who serve some of the world’s biggest businesses. The US Data, Cyber and Tech Regulatory team steers companies through their most sensitive and complex privacy and cybersecurity challenges, including advising on global data breaches and strategic regulatory projects. The Practice Resource Attorney will play an instrumental role in helping our lawyers operate more effectively and efficiently, thereby contributing to the group’s ability to continue to foster and grow relationships with our clients.Role summary/purpose of jobThe successful candidate will be responsible for initiating, managing, and coordinating a broad range of practice resource, knowledge management, and business development activities. The role will support teams working with clients across sectors, including the firm’s largest tech clients. The US Data, Cyber, and Tech Regulatory practice is focused on strategic risks related to: (i) artificial intelligence, (ii) data privacy, (iii) data and digital practices, (iv) content management, and (v) cybersecurity and data loss and cyber-breaches. The role will support partners in this practice and others where these issues arise in their practices (e.g., in the investigations or financial institutions space and in related civil litigation).Key responsibilities and deliverablesMonitor and analyze key legal developments related to the fast-evolving areas described above including new state and federal regulations, how government agencies are applying existing laws to new products, and litigation and enforcement risks in these areas. Disseminate analysis to the lawyers in the practice area – always considering the impact on internal practice resources, as well as profile raising and business development potentialEnable the capture and sharing of insights and work product to support more efficient delivery of services, consistency of approach and risk managementCollaborate with practice management and talent development to help design and deliver associate and summer associate training programsAct as an internal advisor to fee earners, especially those seeking to upskill in relevant areasStay current on the latest technology, including maintaining familiarity with the firm’s current offerings and pilot programs, and attending webinars and/or conferences for general market awarenessPromote innovation and efficiency within the team by providing direction and input into ways of working and use of technology and alternative resourcesAssist with change management and implementation of new technology rollouts as relevant to practice resources and the US Data, Cyber and Tech Regulatory practiceCollaborate with global K lawyers and Learning and Development to ensure the US perspective is represented in global DR training programs, conferences, and other related activities.Collaborate with peers in other practice groups and regions to ensure US Data, Cyber and Tech Regulatory is appropriately represented in cross-practice and cross-border initiatives.Collaborate with the Marketing and Business Development department on practice-related initiativesEnsure capture of team’s Data, Cyber and Tech Regulatory matters and all relevant knowledge insights in FoundationAssist with planning, drafting, publication, circulation and archiving client-facing knowledge products and thought leadership, including blog posts, briefings, client presentations, and webinars, and contributing to larger publications and articlesIdentify topics for client-facing conversations/CLE sessions and assist in the preparation of materialsAssist in managing the team’s web presence, including drafting and updating practice-related contentWork with business development team and others to provide information for ratings, rankings and submissionsPursue speaking opportunities for the team at relevant conferences and provide speaking notesCoordinate and manage practice-related events and sponsorships, including liaising with lawyers, external organizations, and supporting internal/external servicesAssist with additional projects and requests, as requiredKey requirements (Communication/skills/experience)This is a hybrid role requiring in office presence three days per week in Freshfields New York, Washington DC and Raleigh office.J.D. or L.L.M.3+ years’ experience practicing in the area of data privacy, cybersecurity and/or tech regulatoryFamiliarity with and interest in artificial intelligence and emerging technologiesDemonstrated ability to effectively handle multiple, complex and time sensitive projectsProven self-starter with the ability to execute and enhance knowledge management and business development plansExcellent influencing skillsStrong client service focus, outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels within the firmExcellent analytical and writing skillsAn understanding of the principles of knowledge management and interest in legal innovationStrong attention to detailProficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
