Position Overview The University of Kansas (KU) Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) seeks an outstanding individual for a tenured or tenure-track position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank in the interdisciplinary theme of energy. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development of academic and research programs in architectural engineering and to the research community.This search is focused on those candidates exploring cutting edge efforts under the interdisciplinary theme of energy, including the following: integrated building or district energy systems, building-to-grid integrations, grid-interactive buildings, distributed energy resource management, building energy resilience, building energy efficiency and decarbonization, environmentally-sustainable buildings, and/or renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, and wind power for buildings or communities, grid reliability and energy infrastructure as well as net-zero-energy buildings and net metering. The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate in architectural, mechanical, or electrical engineering or a closely-related discipline at the time of appointment. Candidates must demonstrate potential to develop a collaborative and externally-funded research program and to design and teach high quality undergraduate and graduate courses. The starting date is August 18, 2026. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the prior to the start of the position.The University of Kansas School of Engineering () has undergone a significant expansion while taking explicit care to maintain and improve the high-quality student programs the university is known for. The effort involved a multi-faceted approach aimed at growing our facilities, faculty, leadership, research and, most important, supporting students, as it helps industry partners find the new talent, designs and techniques they need to fuel economic growth and business success.The CEAE Department () currently has 24 tenured/tenure-track faculty, and five teaching professors / professors of practice, approximately 350 undergraduate students and 150 graduate students, with programs leading to bachelors, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The department has a strong history of conducting impactful research while focusing on the success of students at all levels. Our close proximity to the Kansas City metro area (home to the 4th largest concentration of architectural, engineering, and construction firms in the country) provides rich opportunities to corporate engagement and partnerships.KU is a comprehensive educational and research- intensive AAU institution that operates through a diverse, multi-campus system, with 28,500 students and 2,800 faculty members. Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students throughout the course of their studies.40% ResearchPerform and conduct research related to energy, including integrated building or district energy systems, building-to-grid integrations, grid-interactive buildings, distributed energy resource management, building energy resilience, building energy efficiency and decarbonization, environmentally-sustainable buildings, and/or renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, and wind power for buildings or communities, grid reliability and energy infrastructure as well as net-zero-energy buildings and net metering. Establish a strong research agenda leading to external grant support and publication in recognized refereed journals as well as participating in local, national and international professional conferences and other activities appropriate to the discipline. Supervise and studies.20% ServicePerform service activities normally expected of university faculty commensurate with rank, including committee service to Department, School, and University. Also includes national and international service to the profession. Required Qualifications All levels:Earned doctorate in architectural, mechanical, or electrical engineering or a closely-related discipline by the time of appointment.Demonstrable expertise in the field of integrated building or district energy systems, building-to-grid integrations, grid-interactive buildings, distributed energy resource management, building energy resilience, building energy efficiency and decarbonization, environmentally-sustainable buildings, and/or renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, and wind power for buildings or communities, grid reliability and energy infrastructure as well as net-zero-energy buildings and net metering.Ability to communicate ideas effectively and work well with others as demonstrated through application materials and interview.Demonstrated potential to develop an externally-funded research program and to design and teach high quality undergraduate and graduate courses.At the level of Associate Professor:Sustained record of scholarship and research;Evidence of national recognition in the field;Demonstrated experience in leading multidisciplinary teams;A minimum of five years of professional experience in a faculty role or an equivalent combination of academic and relevant industry/practice experience.At the level of Professor:Sustained record of scholarship and research;Evidence of national and international recognition in the field;Demonstrated experience in leading multidisciplinary teams;A minimum of ten years of professional experience in a faculty role or an equivalent combination of academic and relevant industry/practice experience, with a sustained record of leadership.
