Job DescriptionThe Telecom Field Technician will perform installation, calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and field testing of electronic and electromechanical systems, subsystems, and components for FAA-regulated systems as well as other customer systems. The role requires hands-on technical expertise with circuit-level diagnostics, RF and communications systems, test equipment operation, configuration of digital and analog electronics, and documentation of work. The Technician will work independently at remote sites, often under austere conditions, and must coordinate with program managers, engineers, subcontractors, and FAA or other customer representatives to ensure systems meet technical and regulatory requirements. Job Duties & Responsibilities - Essential Job Functions may include (but are not limited to) the following:General duties applicable across all tiers: Conduct installation, alignment, calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic systems, RF/antenna systems, power systems, sensors, and ancillary equipment at remote field sites servicing FAA and other customer infrastructure. Use and maintain lab and field test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum/network analyzers, power supplies, signal generators, LCR meters, soldering/desoldering stations, optical test equipment, etc.). Perform circuit-level fault isolation and repair on PCBs, wiring harnesses, connectors, and assemblies. Perform software/firmware loading, configuration, and verification tests using provided tools and procedures. Execute scheduled preventive maintenance and develop corrective maintenance actions; document maintenance activities and test results in technical logs and reports. Follow technical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and written procedures; create or update as-built documentation. Coordinate parts procurement, spares management, and field logistics in support of sustainment activities. Adhere to safety, security, FAA site access procedures, and other customer-specific requirements; maintain site cleanliness and equipment accountability. Provide technical feedback to engineering on recurring failures and recommended design or procedural improvements. Support system acceptance testing, turnover activities, and training for FAA and other customer personnel as required. Tier-specific duties: Journeyman (Level I): Execute routine installation, maintenance, and repair tasks under supervision. Perform basic troubleshooting, replace modules/boards/parts, and escalate complex faults. Support inventory control and basic documentation tasks. Mid / Journeyman+ (Level II): Independently perform complex diagnostics and repairs, including circuit-level soldering and PCB repair. Lead small installation teams, coordinate with vendors, and act as primary field point-of-contact for assigned systems. Contribute to procedure development and test plan execution. Lead (Level III): Lead technical field activities for complex system deployments. Provide mentorship to junior technicians, develop and approve field procedures, coordinate cross-functional teams, and act as senior liaison with FAA, customer, and program leadership. Conduct failure analysis and recommend sustainment strategies.\ Required Qualifications(Include the highest-common requirements; tier-specific minimums called out below) High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree in Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related technical field preferred for higher tiers. U.S. citizenship required where access to FAA or export-controlled material or government sites is anticipated. [Adjust based on program needs.] Ability and willingness to travel 100% and work at remote and austere locations for extended periods. Demonstrated hands-on experience with electronic troubleshooting, circuit-level diagnostics, and repairs. Proficiency with electronic test equipment: digital multimeter, oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, network analyzer, signal generator, power supplies, etc. Proficiency reading and interpreting schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals. Strong soldering skills (through-hole and surface mount) and experience with rework tools. Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver equipment and spares typical for field deployments (see Physical Requirements). Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment in the field, and communicate clearly (written and verbal). Valid driver's license and ability to pass any required driving checks. Ability to obtain FAA contractor credentials/badging and to comply with FAA background checks and site-specific screenings when assigned to FAA facilities. Minimum tier-level experience: Journeyman (Level I): 2+ years of relevant electronics technician experience or equivalent technical training. Mid / Journeyman+ (Level II): 4–6 years of progressively responsible electronics technician experience. Lead (Level III): 7+ years of relevant electronics and field leadership experience, including leading deployments and mentoring junior technicians. Preferred Qualifications Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field (preferred for Level II and III). Military technical training in electronics, communications, avionics, or electronic warfare. Certifications such as IPC-A-610, IPC J-STD-001, ASE, or vendor-specific certifications (e.g., RF vendor, router/switch). Experience with RF, microwave, and antenna systems, including site-level alignment and sweep testing. Experience with fiber optics termination and testing (OTDR, power meters). Familiarity with environmental qualification testing, EMI/EMC troubleshooting, and shielding/grounding practices. Experience with PLCs, embedded systems, and serial/network communications (Ethernet, RS-232/422/485). Experience deploying and troubleshooting power systems, solar arrays, batteries, and UPS equipment. Experience with FAA systems, FAA project processes, and FAA facility operations. Experience with technical documentation tools and CM systems. Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and customer interface experience (for Level III). Work Requirements and Additional Information Position status: Remote with 100% travel to FAA and other customer project sites; overnight and extended-duration deployments expected. Work schedule: Variable; may include extended shifts, nights, weekends, and holiday duty dependent on deployment needs. Must be able to pass background checks, FAA and/or other site-specific security screenings, and any required certifications or medical/fitness assessments for remote deployments. Technicians are expected to maintain current, accurate inventory and condition of assigned tools and test equipment; lost or damaged commercial tools may be the responsibility of the technician depending on program policy. May be required to participate in on-call rotations and rapid deployment taskings with short notice. Will be required to complete FAA- and program-specific training and qualification tasks prior to independent deployment. Physical Requirements Regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs; occasionally lift up to 75 lbs with assistance. Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, enter confined spaces, and access rooftop and tower-mounted equipment. Ability to stand, kneel, crouch, and crawl for extended periods in constrained or austere environments. Manual dexterity for fine soldering, connector handling, and small-part manipulation. Tolerance for variable environmental conditions including heat, cold, dust, vibration, and noise typical of field sites.
