This position supports the Director in the development, promotion and administration of the Writing Center, which assists students, faculty, and staff in the development of effective writing skills. The incumbent also assists the Director in the development and administration of all skills development programming and tutoring programs offered by the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) and The Writing Center. This position is also responsible to teach one section of Writing Workshop course (GEN 106) in each of the fall and spring semesters during the academic year. (This is a 10 month position, requiring some late afternoon and evening hours.) NATURE AND SCOPE: The Coordinator of writing center services reports to the Director of the Academic Center for Excellence. The Coordinator supervises the part-time Writing Specialist and all student writing consultants. The Coordinator of Writing Center Services develops and administers a comprehensive program of tutorial, and related support (workshops, software and hard copy tutorials) and resources to assist members of the Bryant Community in improving their written communications. The Coordinator will hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate a team of peer writing consultants and maintain the College Reading and Learning Association standards and requirements. The incumbent develops programs to assist individuals with writing styles for varied purposes, i.e., writing for the Internet, instructional writing, professional writing, etc. S/he promotes Writing Center services through classroom visits, newsletters, etc,; and meets with individual students to assess specific needs, and then identifies techniques and services to assist students with their writing skills. The Coordinator also serves as a liaison with library staff, the Center for Teaching Excellence, and the faculty to develop a collaborative approach to develop programs and services to promote information literacy. Academic Success Programs: The Coordinator participates in the delivery of programs and services which increase retention including developing and delivering study skills workshops; and serving as a mentor. The Coordinator maintains a caseload of individual students, assesses specific needs, and identifies techniques and services to assist students with academic skills, metacognitive processes, self-regulation of learning processes, and monitors the academic progress of at-risk students. Writing Workshop (GEN 106) Instructor: Serve as an instructor for Writing Workshop (GEN 106), an intensive writing course which strengthens students’ mastery of written communications. As an instructor, the incumbent is responsible to facilitate student learning and engagement through preparing and delivering lectures or discussions, and creating course materials; designing assignments, exams and projects, evaluating student work and providing feedback; maintaining accurate grading records; and providing academic advising and mentorship for students. Principal Accountabilities Responsible for the development and administration of the Writing Center. Assists students, faculty, and staff in the development of effective writing skills. Hire, train, supervise and evaluate the part-time professional writing specialist and a team of peer writing consultants, and maintain the College Reading and Learning Association Certification requirements and standards. Ensure that supervisory practices are in compliance with University policies and the spirit and intent of the University’s diversity and EEO/AA guidelines. Promote Writing Center services throughout the Bryant Community through classroom visits, newsletters, etc. Maintain a caseload of individual students to assess specific needs and identify techniques or services to assist students with academic skills, metacognitive processes, self-regulation of learning process, and monitoring academic progress of at-risk students. Serve as a liaison between the Krupp library, and Center for Teaching Excellence, and the faculty to develop programs and services that promote information literacy. Provide support for writing related faculty and staff development events and programs. ie. Writer’s Retreat, Course Redesign Retreat. Collaborate with the library to encourage and support academic student writing and research. Provide education and support for students related to academic honesty, avoiding plagiarism and the appropriate use of AI. Serve as an instructor for two sections of Writing Workshop (GEN 106) and collaborate with other Writing 106 faculty and coordinator to formalize relationships with ACE and the Writing Center. Qualifications This position requires a Master’s degree in English, Composition or a related field; and professional experience in a writing center providing tutoring and related academic skills counseling to all students including those who are “at-risk,” including first generation students, and/or English as a Second Language students. A strong teaching background is required. Experience incorporating technology into the learning process, and familiarity with Internet-based research and tutoring methods are required. Excellent advising and interpersonal skills are required to establish effective working relationships with students, faculty and other campus resources. Highly developed organizational skills are required to manage center staffing, resources and programs.
